    Bills trades in 2013

The NFL trade deadline comes and goes at 4 pm on Tuesday, but the Bills have already swung three deals this calendar year that have served the club well in the 2013 season. Here’s a look at the moves Buffalo GM Doug Whaley and former GM Buddy Nix made to better position the team for success.
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
    It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

Tavon Austin, Kelvin Sheppard, and Chris White for Manuel, Alonso, Hughes, and Lewis.

Seems like a pretty good trade.

Sheppard hasnt even really played in Indy. I'd love to have Austin, but Alonso alone in these deals has been worth it, and Hughes is a perfect situational guy in Pettine's system

i was just thinking about this the other day. even without including the draft day trade that got them alonso and manuel for austin, the bills have done very well for themselves getting to quasi-starters in hughes (pass rush specialist) and lewis (probable long term qb backup)

then you add in the draft trade which was spectacularly successful and the bills look pretty damn shrewd

Austin has been completely absent in the passing game. They went all in on a gimmick player and don't have the offense in place to use him,.

Manuel has not impressed me so far but I have to say that Alonzo and Hughes have been solid contributors and if Lewis keeps up this level of play I am fine knowing he will be the backup QB next year as he is an RFA next season. While Lewis has not been a pro bowl QB I have to admit that he has done as well as any other backup qb has done given only a week of training camp with the team. I can accept the fumbles during the saints game by him only because that is fixable mistakes that can be corrected in practice. Alonzo is a stud and Hughes is as good of a second string or situational pass rusher as you are going to find right now out there for what he is getting paid.

I like the way this front office/coaching staff has operated so far. Kiko needs to get his game back to where it was the first four weeks of the season.

To be fair to Austin, receivers usually take a year or two to really develop into solid pro receivers. There's so much thinking that these guys have to do on the fly as opposed to just running routes in college (especially in TA's case where he was faster than everyone else and could just simply run past them). I still think that Tavon Austin will develop into an impact player for them eventually, however that trade has paid off huge for the Bills so far.

That's fair but a draft is always about getting the best collection of players so one could argue had we taken Austin in Round 1 we might have then taken Geno Smith in Round 2 and then there's a question as to what LB we'd take in Round 3? Of course you could also argue we could have landed Jordan Reed in Round 3 instead of Goodwin and maybe landed Kenbrell Thompkins in Round 7 vs Chris Gragg which further dilutes how good a draft we had. Let's get it three years to be fair but right now I like Manuel + Woods + Alonso > Austin + Smith.
