Tight Ends Drafted 2006-2013: 1st-3rd Round

I took a look at recent drafts and when Tight Ends tend to be selected, focusing on the 1st-3rd Round.

Buffalo might have a big need at TE this offseason, and I'd like to see them give EJ a good stable of weapons. I do think they could upgrade over Chandler and he is set to hit free agency, so TE could be an option in the early rounds of this draft.

If history is any indicator, one of the top Tight Ends could be there after the 1st Round:

- Only 7 TEs have been taken in the 1st.
- 2 drafts have had 0 TEs taken in the 1st. (2011, 2012)
- Only 1 has had 2 TEs taken in the 1st. (2006)
- 33 TEs have been taken in the 2nd and 3rd Rounds.
- Only 1 TE has been taken in the top 10. (Vernon Davis)
- Only 1 other TE has been taken in the top 20. (Brandon Pettigrew)

Here is a list of every Tight End taken in the 1st-3rd Round since 2006.

Draft Thoughts:

Despite his numbers being down, I still have Austin Seferian-Jenkins as the #1 TE due to him having a better balance of skills, but Eric Ebron is the #2 in my book. That being said, unless they move down a few spots, I don't think either are worth the pick with Buffalo currently set to pick 8th. Some wins could push them into the 10-12 range or around there, but TEs almost never go that high. Maybe they could try to move back a few spots, get an extra pick and look at OG 1st and TE in the 2nd in an effort to fix the two biggest needs on offense. I know I'm pulling a "what if" here, but the front office executed that move last season and addressed some of the biggest needs as a result.

As always feel free to comment and discuss, I hope you enjoy.

The Bills selected TE's Rueben Gant (1974) and Tony Hunter (1983) in Round 1 during my younger days and I have been permanently scarred ever since, when it comes to drafting TE's high.

Hunter was a titanic bust with zero heart out of Notre Dame and Gant came from Okla. St. with hands of iron.

I think we end up 12-17. If we can move back and do your scenario, it's a win. We need to come out of this draft with G, TE, LB in some order from the first 3 picks.

Id certainly like an upgrade over Chandler, but I'd much rather shore up our offensive line. Our run blocking has been atrocious and with a defense like ours is shaping up to be, we need a running game to complement it.

Personally I like Scott Chandler and I feel like he has been a threat in the passing game. Just not much of a blocker is all. Id be ok with a late round TE, but picking one up with our first pick would be a waste IMO.

I'd like an upgrade at TE, but I don't feel it's urgent. I wouldn't mind going with Fiedorowicz if he's available in the third round. I think that's where he belongs, draft-wise, and, with all the speed we have on the outside, his value as a blocker and ability to make tough catches in traffic puts him right in our wheelhouse. A nice, big third and seven TE.

As long as we don't draft another Lonnie Johnson I'm cool with it.

I just brought up TE in another thread before I saw this one, but I would love to see us trade down in the first and take a TE. I really like Ebron and I've already seen him projected to the Bills at #9 in a couple mock drafts.

You're being overly kind to Touchdown Tony Hunter who was supposed to redefine the position. I remember I was so happy after that draft imagining Kelly and Hunter on the team. Then tragedy....there was no Kelly and there was a Hunter, except an entirely different Hunter from what anyone expected. A bad, bad not good Hunter. It still smarts.

Bingo. Many of us scarred from those two. Not to mention how Gant and Ralph Wilson fought publically over his contract. Who cares? It's a TE. NEVER draft a TE that high unless the rest of the team is built and there is a solid QB in place who knows exactly how to utilize them. This is not your current Buffalo Bills.

Only one TE has gone in the top 10 since 2006. Mocks always tend to place TEs earlier than where they actually get picked, and the media likes to make every player at the top of their position out to be a top 10 talent.

I think maybe one TE goes in the 1st this year, which could leave a top 3 TE available when the Bills pick in the 2nd.

That was kind of the point of the writeup. Year after year fans clamor for a TE in the top 10 picks but as we can see that almost never happens. Buffalo should still be able to grab one of the higher rated TEs without making a stupid draft choice.
