Suffice it to say, this is the danger of playing a sport where everyone wears knives on their feet. Absolutely horrific.
According to Le Journal de Quebec, Courcelles was rushed to hospital. His condition was stable and it was unclear at the time of the writing whether the cut would require surgery, or stitches would suffice. Judging by the size of that gash, we're gonna guess surgery.

i played a ton of pond hockey and in crappy adult leagues on and off till i was almost forty. i was always amazed this doesnt happen way more often especially in checking games. each guy out there is several hundred pounds of force gliding around on two slingblades. players look armed to the teeth but even with the best body armor theres a ton of areas only covered by nylon mesh. and since most guys dont even wear that broad type protection to begin with, there seems like numerous opportunities for brutal injuries every game if things line up just right (wrong). thank goodness it seems like they dont happen as often as they could
