You are starting to see around the league that a lot of fans are calling for their offensive coordinators head because they think that he’s not a good play caller. It’s often a black or white picture that is taken by the fan. Play worked equals good play caller, play didn’t work equals bad play caller. However, it goes far deeper than that in a league where very little can be called in a black and white way.

So what determines a good play calling coach? Why do fans almost never mention execution? They are not easy answers but in my opinion what often gets filed under bad play calling is actually bad execution. Illustrating this and differentiating between the two can be difficult at times

Let me use the example of Mike Mularkey to illustrate the point between the two. Mike in Pittsburgh under Bill Cowher was considered an up and coming innovative offense of mind. He was considered one of the best play designers and callers in the league on a talented Steelers team. He then gets hired by the Buffalo Bills. He comes into a situation with a lot less talent and two less than desirable QB’s in Losman and Bledsoe.

The offensive crumbles as does the team as a whole and he is shuttled out of town and lands in Miami. Once again in South beach with no real talented QB on the roster his results are less than stellar to the point where he earns a demotion and then his eventual firing. At this point he has been labeled a Journeyman offensive coach.

His next move, much to the dismay of Falcons fans, lands him on the new coaching staff of the Atlanta Falcons, his home for the next 4 years. The Falcons draft Matt Ryan who most would agree at this point is a QB you can build around and win with. All of a sudden Mike Mularkey star begins to rise again. The offense is working well and Mike is suddenly being mentioned again as one of the best play callers in the game and garnered an even more valuable title, “QB Groomer”. It gets to the point where he is now one of the hot coaching names for teams looking for a new Head Coach. He’s an “Innovative mind” and he’s a great “Play Caller”.......
