i still dont know if i like benning. he was behind the sabres string of missed 1sts. but, on the other hand, i like how boston rebuilt with toughness. dont get me wrong, i HATE boston, but id like to see the sabres build through the draft, trades, and UFA signings. right now, the sabres are focusing on the draft. right move, IMO, but id like to see someone bring in youth from the AHL or NHL as well.

Pierre Lebrun doesn't have Jim Benning in his Top 5 Assistant GMs ready to be a GM but he does mention Benning. I'd be Ok with Benning as well as Jason Botterill from Pittsburgh

Don't want Benning! when he was head of Ametuer Scouting for the Sabres from 1998-2004 check out the players that he drafted First round picks:
Kalinin, Heisten, Kryukov, Novotny, Ballard, Paille, Vanek, Stafford

In 1999 he had what would be a similar situation to now - 1 1st 3 2nd's

His picks:
Barrett Heisten, Milan Bartovic, Doug Janik, & Mike Zigomanis

All stars drafted while he was director of scouting:
1999 - Ryan Miller (5th round)
2001 - Jason Pominville (2nd round)
2002 - Dennis Wideman (8th round)
2003 - Thomas Vanek (1st round) (2003 was one of the best, if not THE best draft in NHL history)

but of course, wideman wasnt signed and he went elsewhere as free agent. he wasnt even ever signed by buffalo. so he left for free.
