Sabres may have setted on their next GM

Paul Hamilton

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) -- Things are not looking good for Jim Benning to be the Sabres next GM while according the TSN’s Bob McKenzie, things are looking good for Tim Murray.

McKenize tweeted Tuesday night that “BUF GM finalists Mike Futa (LA)/Brad Treliving (PHX) informed today they were out. Jim Benning's (BOS) window to talk to BUF expired. Pending successful negotiation of contract with BUF, OTT assistant GM Tim Murray will be next GM of the Sabres. To be clear on BUF GM, while T Murray is last man standing, formal offer, negotiation, ownership approval etc all still remain to be done.”

Sources inside the organization have confirmed to me that the Bruins gave Pat LaFontaine a period where he could talk to Benning and issues arose which concerned LaFontaine. He let the period expire and if he wants to go back to Benning, he must get permission again from the Bruins which many believe would not be granted. The issues were not made clear to me.

Paul Hamilton is a special type of douchebag. Seems to frequently argue with people on twitter.

Apparently, you've never seen Mike Harrington do the same thing.

The real reason why the Sabres chose Murray, should have seen this one coming a mile away Konopka was with the Sens back in 2011-12 http://www.wkbw.com/sports/Sabres-KonopkaMurray-239330141.html

I saw that..and now he wrote an apology saying how is a parent of a special needs child. He really believes anyone thinks he has never once heard that derogatory term with that knowledge? I didn't like the guy before, but now he's just making a complete ass of himself. (more than usual, anyway)

How do you get out of bed in the morning?

Can't wait to see what he does with Nolan...

From watching the press conference it sounds like the Sabres are committed to developing talent and liking our two D picks last year. Murray mentioned about building through the draft and using free agents to put you over the top. So Nolan has to make guys like McNabb and Pysyk show they can be more than just off the bench Dmen. I'd say at least 4th and 5th quality this year. Also Larsson needs to show he can play and stay in the NHL maybe as a 4th line player this year but ultimately think he needs to be at least our 3rd line Center. Grigorenko still needs to develop and at least be a top 6 forward sooner than later. If Nolan can do most of these things think he has a good chance to staying here long term but then again Murray might just give him the season and bring in his guy next year when he can fine tune the roster better. He did dodge a question about if he feels if the team needs a franchise goalie or not but I have a feeling Miller could be gone at the trade deadline if the price is right.

sounds promising though i wish murray was a little more committal on Nolan. To me it sounds like Nolan has to finish on a high note with this team to maintain his job. if we don't see resignings or trades prior to end of year, i think that spells trouble for Nolan.

i think nolan is best with young guys and this role is kind of ideal for him. i hope it works out for him.

On WGR this morning Tim Murray said some things that most Sabres fans already knew but I liked that he was candid and blunt. Some men who have been hired to be a GM might have sugarcoated some things that Murray was asked but he was straightforward about them

The Draft

" The top end of the 2015 draft is very strong. 2014 not as strong it falls off more quickly. 2014 is not a terrible draft but not a great one. 2015 will be a top end draft"

On scouting Mikhail Grigorenko prior to the 2012 draft

"Big,talented smart hockey player that has to be pushed. When he was in junior there were nights Mikhail was the best player in junior hockey. And then there were nights where he wasn't he was from far from it". A couple of games at the WJC he was outstanding and a couple of games he wasn't"

some players can play without passion and be productive. frolov and zherdev both had decent seasons where they put up points, but ultimately left the league because they didnt care enough. jaromir jagr, one of the greatest players in history, only played when he wanted.

i hope thats not the case with grigo. but its worrisome. if it is, i dont want him putting up 50 points a year while being a liability. it isnt worth it.
