    Well there goes the Defense

Pettine is trying to get Jim oneill and Weaver to join his new staff in cleveland.

Man this sucks I really enjoyed the defense last year and now it is probably going to suck yet again.

We can all say Gregg Williams was awful head coach but at least his defenses were fun to watch those years as we had top 5 defenses.

Sad day to be a bills fan, just knowing your defense is going to degress and the unknown that is the offense (will Ej progress or be stagnic, will the passing game be consistent).

    Here we come 6-10.

Players on the field are the most important part of a defense... coordinator second, psotional coaches 3rd.

If the Bills hire Wade Phillips, losing Petting will be addition by subtraction. Not saying Pettine is bad, just that Wade is better.

Wade runs a completly different type of defense.

We are not a 34 or a 43 we are hybrid.

The Bills already had a good defense when Gregg Williams got here. I so don't want Gregg Williams back in Buffalo.

This is a defense that has 4 pro bowlers and the DROTY.

              We'll be fine.

You are probably right, fingers crossed, but look how terrible the defense was under Wanny with many of the same players.

I don't know about that. A team definitely needs talent, but positional coaches that actually can teach, and a really competent coordinator can make average players good, good players very good, and very good players great. Elite talent, of course, is in a category all by itself, but even elite players will suffer under ****ty leadership.

the defense was a lot more fun to watch but i dont think it was much more effective. we will never know how much more pettine might have got out of them with more time but replacing his overall production for last year shouldnt be all that hard. if they hire an established guy they will lose a little just transitioning to a new scheme. i still think its most likely they promote from within, which saves on most of that transition but might turn into another nathan hackett of a frustrating learning year(s) that would suck for all of us. again.

it does suck to lose pettine so fast tho but thems the breaks. one thing for sure, marrone simply has to get this call right if he wants another contract here. this is closer to an assistant hc hire for him than just another dc

Talent is obviously the key to a good defense, but lets not undersell how much the scheme matters. The NFL by and large is not won by one team having a large talent disparity over the other. Its won by out coaching, out smarting, and out scheming the opponent. We lost a huge part of our defensive scheme in Pettine and he's taking arguably his top two assistants with him.

We supposedly have a plan, though we've heard nothing from OBD.

No Rookie of The Year linebacker in Alonso. No Nickell Roby. No Jim Leonhard. No Manny Lawson. No Jerry Hughes. No Alan Branch. Aaron Williams wasn't playing safety, and Mario Williams had a nagging ***** of a fiance and wrist injury.

But one of the Pro Bowlers is due to be an UFA and may not be back and you always have to worry about Sophomore slumps plus most of this talent was on this team in 2012 when the D wasn't as good. Here's to hoping Shwartz can become more hybrid like as he been a traditional 4-3 guy for most of his career but maybe he learned some things from Belichick in Cleveland.

It's the common thought, but I'd say coordinator first, positional 2nd, players third.

Same defensive players were crap under previous coordinator for example.

D'Alessandris did more with same players on OL, for example.

You can have great players easily that you cannot use or use badly, example Spiller, or bad players that can become good under the right system/coach, example McKelvin.

McKelvin played for a few of everything, last year he looked like a real cornerback after making me grind my teeth that we even re-signed his terrible CB self. That had a lot to do with Pettine and Henderson, imho.
