Bucs Searching For Feature Back, Again

TAMPA - You can never have enough good running backs. That's what Coach Jon Gruden kept trying to tell the Bucs last spring when first he tried talking them into signing Stephen Davis and later Emmitt Smith.
Imagine that. Shallow Jon, thinking deep.

Perhaps the Bucs should have listened more closely. Or maybe Gruden should have pushed a little harder. Had he, then the Bucs might not be in their current quandary.

As training camp nears and the Bucs begin their quest for a second consecutive Super Bowl title, there is no position more unsettled than running back.

With projected starter Michael Pittman facing jail time and NFL suspension because of his arrest May 31 on assault charges, the Bucs have no idea who will start at tailback this season.

The good news is, the Bucs have been here before. Quite recently, in fact.

Last year, after losing Warrick Dunn to the Atlanta Falcons and Pittman to an ankle injury on the first day of camp, the Bucs were left wondering who their lead ball carrier would be.
