TAMPA - Veteran defensive stalwarts Warren Sapp and Anthony McFarland aren't the only players struggling to get new contracts from the Bucs.
With their first training camp workout four days away, the Bucs have yet to finalize deals for any of their six draft picks.

The reason is a shortage in the team's rookie allocation pool, which is the amount of money each team is allowed to spend in signing draft picks.

Based on the number of players drafted and the overall spot in which the players were selected, the Bucs were allocated $1,923,161.

That is the third-lowest amount in the league, ahead of Atlanta and Washington. More importantly, it is less than the total paid out to the players taken in the same overall slots a year ago.

Because protocol calls for teams to pay draftees approximately 10 percent more than the player drafted in the same slot the year before, the Bucs don't have enough money to sign all their picks.

However, Bucs general manager Rich McKay said Monday he's dealt with shortages before and sees no problem getting all the Bucs draftees signed in time for the first workout on Saturday.
