Bills FA Possibilities: The case for Brandon Spikes

MLB is a now a need considering the possibility of moving Kiko to the outside. Schwartz may want a run stuffer. Spikes name has been thrown around a lot. Loved him in that Florida 5-2 D. I thought he would be better against the pass since he had some much ground to cover in college. He fits the need to stuff the run. Will he be cheap enough?

This article has a nice breakdown on Spikes:

No matter what color shoes he wears on the field, Brandon Spikes is one of the most imposing run-stuffing linebackers in the NFL.

This says a contract like Koa Misi's may be the market for Spikes... 4 years at 17 mill. I'd do that in a heart beat for him. I think he can be had for under 5 mill per in cap space.

I realize many think he's a liability in pass coverage but let's not forget we have other players that can rotate in on passing downs. Kiko is more than mobile enough to help cover the middle and we have two S's that are converted CB's. I'm not that concerned about his coverage ability. Adding a run stuffer is very important to our future success IMO.

Then there is the issue about his mental markup. He was late due to snow. Belichump benched him basically. He skipped a voluntary workout. His right, he's not the first guy to do that. He also is a emotional leader who will get the players fired up. The question is whether Marrone will see him as a team first guy who he can count on to be a solid leader both on and off the field.

The knee injury appears to not require surgery so it may be a non-issue.

Like I said, I'd go after him. But will the Bills?

Having Pepper, he can give Marrone his take on Spikes.

I loved Spikes on the Gators & would love the Bills to sign him myself.

I like guys from big time winning programs. Culture Change.

Spikes is a man's man. He was every bit as important a leader/teammate for UFs Defense as Tebow was for the offense. I'd add him in a heartbeat.
With the addition of Pepper Johnson, at least we know the Bills decision will be an informed one.

The case against is that he's likely to be the an expensive free agency pickup this year and he's not good against the pass.

Still, it's a good fit and I think we should get him.

I disagree Gr8, his time at UF he was productive, loyal, tough, nasty, and a helluva leader.
I think he would be awesome here. It's time the players reflected the townspeople.

I say yes. Gives us an upgrade at backer and then we can use our draft picks in other areas, mainly offense.

I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
                          It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

As a player on the Pats* that is to be expected.

But if the Bills signed him, I have no doubt Spikes would love Buffalo & the Bills fans.
