In her living room on Mountain View Drive, Sheila Reynolds watches big men try to put the hurt on Jake Plummer. This bothers her. She taught 20 years at Pierce Park Elementary School and helped craft the minds of nearly 600 students. But Jake Plummer might have been her favorite.
When Plummer tumbles to the turf in the arms of a defensive tackle, prayers rise from the Reynolds' living room. Sheila, who has known Plummer since he was a talkative fifth-grader, covers her eyes. She can't bear to watch her friend hurting.
"I just pray that he gets up," she says. "It just makes you sick to see him get hit. I hold my breath. He's quick and stuff, but those defenders are out to hurt people, and they're so big and strong."
On fall Sundays, televisions in Boise are tuned to the Jake Plummer show.
