2002: The Florida Panthers moved from 3rd to 1st. The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired the pick in a trade and selected left wing Rick Nash. The Atlanta Thrashers dropped from 1st to 2nd and selected goaltender Kari Lehtonen.


2003: The Florida Panthers moved from 4th to 1st. The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired the pick in a trade and selected goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. The Carolina Hurricanes dropped from 1st to 2nd and selected center Eric Staal.


2004: The Washington Capitals moved from 3rd to 1st and selected left wing Alex Ovechkin. The Pittsburgh Penguins dropped from 1st to 2nd and selected center Evgeni Malkin.


2005: In a special lottery to determine the draft order after the 2004-05 season was canceled due to the lockout, the Pittsburgh Penguins won the top pick and selected center Sidney Crosby.

theyll finish with the second pick at worst. i know their odds increase slightly this year because the first round is only 29 picks this year. so if the sabres end up with the worst record, theyll have the 30th pick as well. in effect, last pick of the first round.
