Cleveland isn't going to resign him (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/02/26/browns-parting-ways-with-dqwell-jackson/). He would be a nice fit for the bills for a few more years. Have to sign either him or Spikes if we are going to fix the linebackers through FA.

Why are they dumping him? He's an OK player - intolerable contract?

Cap hit, aging player.

I'd be for giving him a look.

“D’Qwell is the epitome of class, leadership and professionalism. Every day of his NFL career, D’Qwell has been a solid representative of the Browns and the City of Cleveland, both between the lines on Sundays and off the field in our area community.

I like the sounds of that.

I would prefer a veteran LB next to Kiko.

Let's spend some money.

He's still a very effective player with 2-3 good years left. Always around the ball & he can play right away.

Knock out some needs in FA and take pressure off the draft. Measure his market.

OK consolation prize if they miss out on/don't go after Spikes.

You'd have a better chance of making the team if you went with HJ Williams.

He's a little small but still one helluva ILB I feel bad for Pettine he has to lose him but love to see him land here. I like him better than any of the ILB that would be available as UFAs. The question is if he can man the middle by himself if play a 4-3. I'd willing to find out though so I'd say Whaley better be working the phones now to see what it will take to bring him in.

He was the considered the team leader of the Browns defense. He was vocally critical of the team firing Chudzinski. He had a big cap hit.

Jackson had 141 tackles last year. (7th in the league)

Jackson is 4th in tackles since 2011.

This would be a great pick up. He may be 31, but he's healthy, and very productive and a character/leader.

I read somewhere, thinking Pro Football talk, that he was one of the worst ranked linebackers in football last year.

I will try and find the link.

"Pro Football Focus ranked the 2006 second-round draft pick the 13th-best inside linebacker in football during the 2011 season. He dipped to 41st overall in 2012 and 42nd in 2013."

I live Jackson, but I'm wary to pull free agents from the Browns defense. The Browns are sitting on a tremendous amount of cap space, so even though his cap hit was high they could have afforded him for at least another year rather than eat millions in dead money. For them to cut a locker room leader and captain worries me. If it's because he's upset over the Chud firing, fine. Let's go get him. If it's because he's lost a step or Pettine doesn't think he fits, then I'm less enthused. Especially since we'll be supposedly running the same scheme here.

And rumor has it that the Redskins are going after him, you know they'll overpay him like no other team will.

Again, he was 7th in the league in tackles.

Maybe you're getting mixed up with Kelvin Sheppard.

should be interesting if the browns make a run for Carrington if the bills don't re-sign him since Pettine was very impressed with him.

Personally, I wouldn't see much good in grabbing the 42nd best lb in the league. Having been 41st the year before, well, he's not who he was 3 years ago.

At any rate, I'd expect him to join Horton in Tennessee while hopefully we can find one with his best days ahead of him, like a lot more of his best days.

Pettine's in no position to know whether he lost a step or not - all he could hear is words from the remaining staff. One can only imagine their current mindset. IIRC, they save a 4.2M roster bonus, and dead money is what it is - in the future. The NFL is up there with any level of government when it comes to juggling the books, inventing numbers and projecting future expenditures.

He had a decent season. I realize that total tackle numbers are inflated, but I get a steady stream of CLE ball here so I've watched 'em for a long time. He's a good player still.

BUF will be in the running for him, IMO. At least they should be...Their 10-year+ search for a decent complement of LBs is right up there with the endless QB search.

Alonzo was a pleasant surprise, and I think he will stick around the NFL for a long time barring injury. He runs to the ball - a great attribute - but is more a Mad Rooster than a Mad Bull.

Manny Lawson helped. Jackson can help. Perhaps the potential draftee Mack can help. What the rest of the league knows is - here's another season, here's yet another bunch of BUF LBs.

I don't think he will be unemployed for long, unless he thinks he's another Byrd. :kid:
