From what I understand and someone may correct me that knows better but I heard it is 10 years 40 MM. He is in year 3 and 22-23 MM has been paid. He has 7 years left and due 17-18MM but cap hit is 4MM.

Did you hear about the recapture penalty for the Sabres that comes along with that contract, Even if he is traded it falls on Buffalo.

Yea, the Sabres would be on the hook for whatever the remaining amount he is owed when he retires so if he retires in 3 more years after the 2017 season and he received 30 million of the 40 million the Sabres would be hit with a 2.5 million cap hit each year for the remaining 4 years of the contract.
