Yup...He spent 40 days with the Islanders.

Hope_Smoke That's a weird situation in Buff. Rumours after LaFontaine took over that he wasn't interviewing candidates but picking brains for ideas on a how to run be a GM. Didn't want an experienced guy, wanted a young first-time GM that he could influence. McKenzie always shot down these suggestions and kept reiterating that LaFontaine was just being methodical in his search...beginning to sound like those rumours may have been true.

At the end of the day, This makes the Sabres look like a ******ed franchise to the rest of the hockey world.

But.....Pat was just a figure head that got the fan's all happy and clapping like baby seals.(No offense but that's what it was)

I don't think this will really hurt them that much as long as Murray stays, He's the real talent in the front office anyway.

@SabresPR
The #Sabres have announced that Pat LaFontaine has resigned his position with the team to resume his previous role with the NHL.
Terry Pegula: “I would like to thank Pat for all he has done for the organization. Pat joined us at a very difficult time and helped transition the organization down a new path. Tim Murray will continue as GM & Craig Patrick will continue as Senior Hockey Advisor.“As has been the case since I bought the team, we’ll continue to do whatever is needed to rebuild the organization & keep it on path towards our ultimate goal of winning the Stanley Cup.”

LaFontaine: “Terry Pegula hired me in Nov. and my primary objective was to lead the Sabres organization through a time of transition. I'm proud of what we've been able to accomplish in a short period of time and want to thank Terry and Kim Pegula for the opportunity and their support during my time with the Sabres. I also want to convey my best wishes to all of the players in the Sabres organization and to wish them the best of success in the future. Most importantly, I want to convey my heartfelt appreciation to the great fans of the Sabres for the way I have been treated here as a player and as an executive."

And wow, did we dodge a bullet on that.... Vanek has value but is nowhere near worth being the top paid player in the league.

That's what you get when a "FAN" is the teams owner..

I've said this before and I'll say it again:

Pegula is becoming the NHL's Snyder. They're both fans who have no more knowledge of the actual game than you or me (perhaps even less), but they just happen to have hundreds of millions of dollars from **** unrelated to football/hockey, so they own a team and we don't.

The only way it will work is if they let their egos go and allow the people who actually know the game to run the teams properly.

Regardless of cap room it would have been asinine to make Vanek the highest paid player in the game. 3 years ago I was thrilled that Pegula bought the Sabres from Golisano now I just don't know what to think

I'm disappointed with Pegula too.

Golisano was hockey's Ralph Wilson. Pegula is hockey's Danny Snyder. We went from one extreme to the other, but it's the same problem in opposite directions: as long as the owner demands a say, the experts have their hands tied and the team won't be successful.

LaFontaine's departure had clearly been brewing.

He was one of the scheduled speakers at Friday's Power Play Luncheon in the Lexus Club at the FNC but was a late scratch as the crowd was told he was not feeling well. The function was a heavily promoted one featuring LaFontaine, Danny Gare, Gilbert Perreault and Rene Robert, the four living Sabres who have their numbers retired.

LaFontaine was also not seen nor heard from Friday during the activity surrounding the big trade. LaFontaine, remember, spoke out strongly about the Sabres keeping Miller on multiple occasions and it was highly unusual for him to be absent on the night a face-of-the-franchise player like Miller was traded.

In addition, Nolan revealed during his postgame news conference that he was told by Joe Battista, the team's VP of hockey-related businesses, to pull both Miller and Ott from the lineup. That was also curious. Battista, a longtime friend of Pegula, was just hired this year from Penn State and has zero NHL experience.

LaFontaine clearly wants Nolan to get the coaching job on a permanent basis and a source close to the team said those negotiations are ongoing. But Murray said on a radio interview Friday on a Toronto station that the status of Nolan was something he might look at after the season and that Nolan would have a role within the organization -- but never said that role would be as the coach.
This is LaFontaine's second quick exit from an NHL front office. He worked just 40 days as an unpaid senior adviser for New York Islanders owner Charles Wang before resigning in July, 2006, because he disagreed with Wang's decision to fire general manager Neil Smith and replace him with Garth Snow.

"It's been a really tough 24 hours," Ehrhoff said. "Yesterday was a tough trade to take for the team when you lose your captain and your starting goaltender and to see Patty resign today is another tough blow. I'm just shocked right now."

WagonCircler

well Nolan does deserve an extension IMO but then wtf is all of this about?

a 34 yo goalie and the return we get for him or the lack of trying to extend him?

You know what I keep wondering about? What if it's a much bigger issue? Like whether or not to tank for McDavid.

Seems to me that has the possibility for a huge philosophical divide, and it would explain the silence about all of this.

I don't know why, but I got a chill when I heard Pegula come right out and say "If you want Sydney Crosby, you have to come in last." He made no bones about it, not effort to hide it. I remember thinking at the time 'Wow, tanking doesn't seem like it's in Pat LaFontaine's skill set.'

And it could be that the total liquidation sale didn't sit well with PL, but that Murray and Terry were more on the same page about it.

I don't know, but this scenario just doesn't seem very far fetched to me, and it would be a big enough issue to resign over. That would make much more sense than quitting over a single trade or coaching disagreement.

John Davidson is the President of hockey operations for the Blue Jackets, If he want's to fire/override his GM he has the power to do so and has, He did the same in ST, Louis as President.

Not sure if Pat had the same power, But the President is above the GM and usually does have the final say( But hardly override), The Rangers gave Glen both titles so no issue there for them.

Sounds like Buffalo had to many chefs trying to cook a meal.

I'm also hearing he was not in on the Miller trade, No one talked to him about it...Stay tuned!!

Sabres Hockey Prez LaFontaine was told he had final say over hockey decisions. Once GM was hired, LaFontaine wasn't getting final say

Radio interview...Sounds like it's on Pegula and his friends...

not THATS a specific piece of information

if thats the case and pegula really told him that and then took it away then yeah i woulda quit too. the job is completely different if you dont have that specific authority

but i can also see how perhaps murray is correct and lafontaine couldnt be swayed away from preferring to maintain miller. murray arrived, made his case that it would be damaging to the organization not to move ryan now, and his argument won over pegula. it remains to be seen how it plays out but you gotta admit that someone in murrays case is probably a lot more qualified to make that decision than patty

ultimately perhaps we might say that pegula erred in giving patty that authority but it woulda been hard to predict it happening this way. pegula might feel regretful that it had to come to this but if murray made enough of a good rational business case then patty might have given him no choice

I'm sure Pat knew what his role was going to be one way or the other before he agreed to the post..That's what makes this whole situation so wacky.

Each teams President Of Hockey Operations is different, Some just do paper work, Wile some have a real hand in player personnel. (John Davidson type)

I could see how Patty might of thought he should have a little input in regards to moving the franchise player (Miller)..It's not like it was Tyler Ennis involved in this trade and Pat wanted to butt in...LOL

I kind of agree with the lets try and keep Miller rational, They have plenty of cash and cap space, He's playing great, Don't have any real options in the system..And he puts fans in the stands, The only bright spot on real bad team.

I don't think it would have hurt the future of the franchise in anyway if they kept him, It's not hard to say "Hey Ryan here's $7.5 per for 3 years" want to stay?? If not we will need to move you.(Maybe they tried)

Do you think these kids taking a beating night in and night out will help with confidence and their development??, At least with Miller in net he could stop some of the bleeding.

Let's be honest here, With out Millers play this season, The Sabres may only have 8 wins.

And do the Sabres want every pick in the draft? The odd's of picks coming to fruition are against you, And most are 4 years away on average from being NHL ready.

And it's not like they got a great return for Miller either..I'm shocked St Louis was able to walk away with their top prospects, And sent over a late 1st round pick that's a "maybe" he'll be able to play in the NHL one day kind of thing.

And sent over a guy they been trying to move off their roster anyway (Stewart)...And replaced him with Steve Ott..The Carrier kid is a mid level prospect with nothing really special about him.

My gut say's Pat wanted more (young) NHL ready players/Or very close to ready to come back to Buffalo, I think Pat knows how long it will be before Buffalo's rebuild was complete if all they did was gamble through the draft.

If they don't move some of their assets for NHL ready talent this could all go bad, Real bad...

Oh...And if Pegula screwed over Patty, He's just a strait up shmuck..

a lot of reaching here.

from the sounds of it, patty wanted miller to stay, and reached out to miller. murray traded him, so patty took his ball and went home.

not that big of a deal.

its not the first time patty hasnt been able to hang on to this job. hes simply not cut out for it.

Interesting comments by Murray saying that LaFontaine was aware of everything he was working on and on board with them.
