The tag had been an option for the Bills to secure S Jairus Byrd or any of five other unrestricted free agents for the 2014 season, but absent long-term deals, the Bills chose not to make use of the tag.Whaley and the front office made every effort to secure a long term deal with the Byrd camp on the second go round after last summer’s negotiations resulted in the safety playing under the one-year franchise tag. In the end, it was clear that the two sides differed on how much the contract should be worth.
“We have negotiated with representation for Jairus Byrd for more than a year, but have yet to reach an agreement on a contract extension," said Whaley. "We remain open to getting a deal done with Jairus, but we have chosen not to use the franchise tag on any of our impending unrestricted free agents.”
Byrd is now fully expected to hit the open market. Free agency opens

Great.

So annoying.

We lose him for nothing and add a new hole. And on top of that might not use the money we didn't spend on him (new contract or franchise tag) on a replacement or even a significant upgrade at another spot.

Dumb. Should have franchised him and traded his ass.

And before anyone jumps on me as being a Byrd supporter, it's not about that clown it's about using him as an asset for a draft pick or player.

Maybe they think he won't get what he's demanding when he hits the open market. Or maybe they think they can get a contract done before FA opens still. I'm trying to make sense of not securing him as an asset for a trade at a minimum.

Maybe they think he won't get what he's demanding when he hits the open market. Or maybe they think they can get a contract done before FA opens still. I'm trying to make sense of not securing him as an asset for a trade at a minimum.

I would bet my life savings that the Bills don't sign him within the next week.

The tag was the only leverage they had.

If they DO sign him (slim chance), it'll be AFTER he's heard offers from different teams.

If they DO sign him (slim chance), it'll be AFTER he's heard offers from different teams.

For all of the Byrd supporters, keep your chin up. Maybe it's a good faith maneuver on both parties. Buffalo's allegedly very handsome offer is on the table, Byrd gets an opportunity to test the market, if he doesn't get a big enough bite they sign the deal on the table...if he does, Buffalo matches it.
