:bigwave: I imagine that's the last we'll see of Luke Adam in Buffalo! Another draft pick that Regier missed out on

Actually, no gm in Darcy's reign hit on more draft picks than Darcy. There was an article on it a year or so ago.

And all it did was get the Sabres to a complete tear down and rebuild.

That goes to show just how ruff the NHL draft is.

When the NHL came out of the lock-out with new rules against clutching & grabbing Regier thought he built a team of mighty mites, speeding to the net. IT was all well and good until the league loosened it's enforcement of the new clutching & grabbing rules a year or two in. That left Regier's team on the outside looking in.

the sabres were competitive for many of regiers years. including some seasons with deep playoff runs. so, yes it works.

Can you post his draft classes?

He was hired in the summer of 1997 right?

hockey DB has them.

his draft picks combined have a higher ratio of games played over any other GM in his tenure.

You could argue that because the team was bad they had to play. Not that they were good enough to play.

Darcy certainly had a knack for drafting quality second/third tier players. Except for most of his first round picks.

That's a bull**** metric for measuring draft effectiveness. A game played by Alex Ovechkin is worth more than a game played by Steve Ott, and a game played by Ott is worth more than a game played by Leino or Matt Ellis.

Reiger didn't find any superstars. Hell, he barely found any top 6 forwards. Sure, teams need the Paul Gaustad and Tyler Ennis types and they have their value, but you can't build a team around role players, and that's all Darcy ever found.

2000 Gaustad was only one on list who really played any games
2001 Roy and Pomminville are top with Thorburn 3rd followed by our first rounder Jiri Novotny
2002 Dennis Wideman and Keith Ballard top the list of most games played followed by Danny Paille
2003 Vanek followed by Hejda (never heard of him though he has played in 528 games) followed by Clarke MacArthur and Nathan Paetch (I see a pattern)
2004 Stafford, Sekera, Kaleta
2005 Chris Butler, Nathan Gerbe, Marc Andre Gragnani
2006 Mike Weber and Jonas Enroth
2007 Corey Tropp, Paul Byron, TJ Brennan
2008 Tyler Myers, Tyler Ennis and Luke Adam
2009 Zack Kassian, Marcus Foligno and Brayden McNabb
2010 Mark Pysyk
2011 none
2012 Grigorenko
2013 Ristolainen and Zadorov

Wow. I would hate to be some of those guys on that list. And I picked 2000 arbitrarily.

1999 Ryan Miller followed by Mike (my fax machine broke) Zigomanis and Doug Janik
1998 Kotalik, Kalinin, Andrew Peters
1997 Campbell, Tallinder, Afinogenov (damn, I bet Darcy didn't have a lot to do with this draft

Just for the heck of it:
1996 Corey Sarich, Eric Rasmussen
1995 Jay McKee, Marty Biron
1994 Wayne Primeau, Curtis Brown, Shane Hnidy
so the previous regime wasn't a whole lot more adept

But when I was blasting Regier, a lot of people defending him would use Miller as an excuse for finding gems in the draft as well as Gaustad to a lesser extent.

four first round picks didn't even play a single game in the NHL, ouch. But I bet that is close to normal in the NHL

our luxury currently is that our first round pick this year and probably next year will be top 5. the ability to hit on those are higher than picking 12 and beyond.

i like our chances to build a team quickly (quickly being about 2 years).

and part of me thinks that the sabres will get some big names in FA with trades before draft to speed up the process and not be overly reliant on only youngesters. To me it has an air of getting a drury type guy who has the work ethic and can be a good influence on high ceiling players. You only need one or two.

And watching hte sabres last night, every line was skating well. A little jumbled at times, but the energy was there. now if they have a guy like a callahan driving them, i wouldn't be surprised if they can be a playoff team in 2-3 years and a good one at that.

That's because he was the only one allowed to put such ****ty players out on the ice. No other GM was given that kinda rope.

Can you back that up with some data?

How about a link to the story?

I looked through the Sabres draft a bunch of times. And I don't see anything that supports your claim.

I agree that he did not play well in his last stint with Sabres. He is only 23. It does seem longer though. Not ready to put him out to pasture yet but his window is shrinking.

And the notion that you don't need good center play... that killed Darcy's plan of league dominance
