Byrd update: Redskins could be out, return to Bills still possible

    St Louis

It was reported earlier today that the St. Louis Rams were one of the teams interested in Titans cornerback Alterraun Verner as many had expected. However,...

The Rams have a gaping hole at the safety position other than T.J. McDonald who showed flashes in his rookie season. Adding a difference maker like Byrd would greatly improve a Rams secondary that struggled last season. Byrd reportedly wants more than $9 million per year which is something that the Rams would like to avoid spending, but could do it if needed.

      Re: Teams courting Byrd

That's when Polian's 'B-minus' grade for Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd caught our eye.

By next week, Byrd could become the highest paid safety in the NFL, as he's expected to fetch a deal worth at least $9 million on the open market. That represents a wide gap between Polian's valuation and what Byrd could actually receive, so we asked the former Bills general manager about his take on Byrd.

Polian said the salary ranges assigned to the letter grades can eventually change based on market spending, but noted that his grade of Byrd wouldn't be affected.

"He's a speed-deficient safety," Polian said. "Safeties don't get faster as the years go on."
With the NFL free-agent negotiating period having opened at noon Saturday, it's timely to take a closer look at our ESPN NFL free-agent tracker .This year, ESPN NFL analyst Bill Polian served as our "general manager" for the tracker, assigning letter grades to each player available.

Well, obviously Polian is just a butt-sore front office homer that is making up excuses to rationalize Byrd walking away from Buffalo.

Yeah, the "realists" here know more than a future HOF GM. They all got off from Wal-Mart, Target, and McDonalds to go to the combine. Their analysis is forthcoming.

meh. Polian. He built one juggernaut of a defense for the Colts. Not.

thanks to Peyton Manning. Manning hid the flaws of that team. Polian did a much better job building the Bills and Panthers teams of the 90s.

Bill Polian is a great mind, but I disagree with him here. I think Byrd's instincts more than make up for his supposed lack of speed.

How many times have you attributed that to the league letting Manning's OLine hold?

His instincts are essentially what makes him great because his speed sucks. However as Polian said, and the reality is, players only get slower as they age. Never mind that he has a chronic plantar fasciitis problem.

It's widely assumed the Browns will pursue Bills free safety Jairus Byrd, but they didn't contact him on the first day teams could negotiate for unrestricted free agents.

The first day of the free agency negotiating period came and went without the Browns inquiring about Bills safety Jairus Byrd, one of the hottest commodities on the market, a league source told cleveland.com. It's been widely assumed that the Browns would be hot after the three-time Pro Bowler, because he played for coach Mike Pettine last year in Buffalo.

It doesn't mean the Browns won't join the Byrd sweepstakes -- just that they haven't yet. The Rams are one team that has inquired about Byrd, according to nfl.com.

The Browns have a lot of draft ammo to spend, so they are fat and sassy. I could see Pettine pushing for him as a PR move. Pettine showing what he can bring to the club.

Byrd won't find a better deal than what the Bills already offered. Mark it down.
