View Full Version : For Us To Make the Playoffs We Must First Improve in the Division

To those arguing that Free Agency has been good for us, we must first realize that "improvement" is purely relative. While some argue as if all other teams remain the same during the offseason, the simple fact is that most teams change one way or another.

For us we first need to improve within the division. I borrowed the four teams' free-agency standings from Scout.com, here they are.

Who looks at this and truly believes that we've made progress against the other three AFCE teams, all of which posted better records and none of which had losing records like we have for nearly a decade. I'm not sure that all three other East teams won't post winning records this season. Clearly if that were to happen we wouldn't. But we were 3-3 in the division last year for half of our wins, I'm not sure we hit that divisional mark again.

Well, we lost Byrd and obviously he's better than all of the other team's losses combined.

LOL. The original post is stupid on so many levels.

Not to mention the source he sites says Eric Decker is a "5 star" signing? LOL. He will do less than Holmes in NY. He was purely a product of who was throwing to him.

The Bills #1 need is a franchise QB. They still don't have that.

The only team to worry about is the Patriots, and we came close to beating them in the opener.

We swept the Dolphins last year with Thad Lewis at QB both times. We absolutely murdered the Dolphins AND the Jets at home.

In the first Jets game, our entire secondary was out...the ONLY starter playing was Aaron Williams, and he was switched to cornerback, where let's just say he's not as good. That's the game Justin Rogers gave up a million yards and TDs to Geno Smith. Look what happened in the second game.

Also, the Jets got freakishly lucky to win at least two of their games, and basically won because of penalties called in the last seconds of the game. The unnecessary roughness call in the Tampa Bay game, and the unbelievable "pushing into the pile" call against New England, where they missed the game-winning fieldgoal at the end and had another shot much closer. Could not believe either of those. They should have been 6-10.

I think the Bills were more of an 8-8 team last year too. They easily could have had that record or better if the ball bounced a different way a few times. The Dolphins and Jets do not scare me. It's still the Patriots. Everyone else in the division probably needs a Wildcard spot to get into the playoffs.

Every team gets good or bad breaks that help determine the outcome of games. Every team could've won another couple games if the ball bounced the right way. Every team could've lost a couple more games if they didn't pull out some close wins and/or get them bounces.

You can't just take out the breaks for one team and act like they don't count. At the same time you can't also add wins to another team because they lost some close games. I know tons of people love to do it and I also sit there during the season at some point and say the same thing during/after a game. You just can't exclude just the fortunate wins for one team and exclude the unfortunate losses of another.

All 32 teams in the NFL experiences this no matter if you were the 2 win Texans or the Seahawks. A team that finishes 10-6 could easily be 12-4 just as easily as they could've been 8-8. A 4-12 team in the NFL could've been 6-10 just as easily as they could've been 2-14. The only thing that counts is if they won or lost the game. Good teams find a way to win more of them games while bad teams find a way to lose them. EVERY NFL team can say the same thing.

Hey at least we're always the "what if" 8-10 win team almost every season. Unfortunately that doesn't count towards a playoff spot though.

Same source that rates our picked-up players, keep that in mind. Decker's a quite capable receiver that has 1 ypr more than Stevie, posted a better first four seasons than Stevie, and who has 5 more receiving TDs than Stevie in 4 seasons compared to SJ's 6 seasons.

I know what you're going to say, he's had Manning throwing to him, ... quite true, but still, it's not as if Manning's single-handely responsible for all of that.

I love how people discount things here.

That's very fair. Couldn't you have done this yourself?

Regardless, here it is, I don't think it's going to help your implicit position.

Sorry about the formatting on that last one, not sure what happened.

Either way, and as you can see, the other AFCE teams have improved more than we have.

The Jets lost Cromartie, who IMO is a reach at 4-Star although realizing that's subjective, I do think he's overrated, along with Howard. But they picked up Decker and Giacomini, who IMO is at least as good as Howard. The Jets' pass rush is great though, and while they'll need a CB, they've imrpoved.

The Pats lost Spikes and Talib, the former being a one-dimensional run defender, the latter IMO overrated and incapable of being there for 16 games for one reason or another. They gained Revis, LaFell, who JMO is highly underrated, and Browner, and given their young receiving corps growing up, they'll have improved significantly next season.

As to the Fins, they lost Carroll, Jerry, Owens, and Soliai of any consquence, but more than made up for it with the acquisitions of Albert, Delmas, Finnegan, Mitchell, and Smith. They'll be more than fine in the positions that they lost too given their depth and existing players. In fact, they're a good example of pruning expendable players while adding at holes.

So it's clear that NE and Miami have gotten better, IMO so have the Jets, but at minimum they've held sway. It's a tough if not impossible argument to suggest that we've improved by signing a one-dimensional run-defending MLB with almost no pass-D skills to speak of, in place of a 5-Star FS that's arguably the best in the league. There isn't one other player that we've signed that carries much weight in terms of impact ability. Not one. In fact, after Spikes, who will start at MLB, all we've done is sign depth while all three other divisional teams have signed numerous starting players.

Have at it and explain now how we should gain on them.

The only thing you need to know about making the play-offs is, qb play, qb play, qb play.

They are good enough at the other positions.

Good data to consider as part of an evaluation. Bad data if used as THE evaluation. Needs play a role. Teams may not grade well if what they are looking to fill doesn't require 5 stars, for example. Not all positions are created equal either, so you really can't equate two different positions. Each has to be weighted differently depending on schematic importance and weaknesses addressed vs strengths/weaknesses lost. Losing a guard and gaining a WR doesn't necessarily depend on star rating. It could be part if it, but offensive style is going to weight one higher than the other. In theory, a 4 could mean more than a 5, depending on circumstance.

I disagree, as we'll see this season, our defense this past season was overrated, highly. It will fall back to earth this season.

This is what a good analyst can pick out. We played a schedule that was among the weakest in the league in terms of offensive teams. We didn't win a single game against a good and well-balanced offensive team this past season. Every win was against a bottom-half offensive team.

Still, we poured every resource and ounce of creativity into our pass rush, at the complete expense of the run D, and still we ranked only 20th in scoring D, again, with few top offensive teams even on our schedule.

That changes this season and it will be interesting to see the excuses when we falter back to 27th or whatever in defense. Will it be Schwartz's fault? Marrone's? Byrd's leaving? The players' fault? Or will people actually see that maybe we just see the aforementioned circumstances and how they led to a media overrated defense this past season.

Not sure why you say that we're good enough at the other positions. We have most of our DL nailed down minus one DE spot, we only have two starting caliber LBs, we now have nothing at FS, a questionable SS given the aforementioned circumstances, one starting CB that has sucked for years and only "excelled" given the aforementioned circumstances this past season only, along with Gilmore who didn't improve like he should have this past season but who is above-average nonetheless.

Offensively we have a RB that has carried this team who is at the end of his service-life, another that's a one-dimensional role-playing type that is incapable of providing solid starting 3-down play in Jackson's absence, huge issues at QB, average at best starting WRs, a serviceable at best TE, and at least a few issues on the OL, not to mention a head coach that still hasn't even proven that he belongs in this league and one that has now hitched his future tenure in the NFL to what many of us know will be a QB that simply doesn't develop as he should and that has never provided the type of play in college that would lead one to believe he'll be even an average starting QB in the NFL.

Stating uncertainty as a counter to these things is not a counterargument, it's an excuse.

This team has enormous holes to fill in it starting lineup. People here talk about how we've signed a lot of depth, which even if it were true, and it isn't, the problem is that we're hurting for starting players, not depth. The Pats are hurting for depth, or were. The Bengals hurt for depth. We hurt for starters.

Either way, using your argument, we're still lightyears and another head coach away from making the playoffs and becoming a competent and competitive team.

This team and organization are a mess, and absolutely mess from the very top right on down.

BTW, here are some very competent top-10 QBs from this past season whose teams failed to make the playoffs:

Romo/Dallas, Stafford/Detroit, Roethlisburger/Pittsburgh, and Ryan/Atlanta.

That's nearly half of top-10 QBs representing and average of 28.5 TDs/15 INTs that failed to make the playoffs and whose teams none of which even posted a winning record.

I couldn't agree with you more. I've always held the viewpoint that chemistry, particularly on the OL and in the F7 is critical and worth much talent.

Now, given that we agree, do you see the Bills checking that box? Because I don't. I see NE checking it. I even see Miami checking it the past season or two.

I see us doing the opposite, we blow the bank on dumb signings like Fitzpatrick and to a lesser extent on a player like Mario who has the biggest defensive contract in the league but doesn't even approach being in the top-20 defensive players.

We could do ridiculously better, but that requires management that actually understand what you just said when clearly they don't nor have since Polian left.

Which reminds me, Polian's teams also didn't necessarily feature the best talent after players like Bruce and Talley. Kelly was never like the legendary QBs, Reed was an average starter at best. Thurman was among the best. None of our TEs were legendary either. Certainly our secondary in those years was never superlative either.

Your thoughts?

By the way TedMock, having said what you said, it also doesn't mean that you can take players like Corey Graham, Keith Rivers, Anthony Dixon, and Chris Williams and have them gel like a championship team. That doesn't work either.

Also, let me ask you, what's your take on Spikes vs. Byrd?

In Spikes we gain a one-dimensional LB that's a liability on most plays due to his lack of ability to play pass D, but one that's superlative against the run.

In Byrd we lose a fantastic all-around FS that's arguably the best in the league and one with a nose for INTs, a ballhawk if you will, and creating TOs, and one that if he says in the league long enough should have absolutely no trouble finishing top-10 in career INTs for a Safety, not to mention one that has three times as many sacks as Spikes.

I think we're all going to see that Spikes, while fantastic against the run, isn't going to help this team on passing downs this fall. This is why Belicheat let him walk. I view it almost as a Bledsoe thing. Spikes is good overall, but you cannot have a MLB that cannot play the pass at all, and expect to have that circumstance be overlooked en route to building a playoff caliber team much less a championship caliber one.

Byrd may or may not have been worth the money, but the step down from Byrd to Searcy, barring some other signing, but there aren't any left of above average caliber, IMO will be greater than the step up from whomever to Spikes and his limited pass-D abilities in a league that's predicated upon passing.

Well, I don't see that the other teams have improved more than the Bills.

Surprised you didn't name Vick as a big pick up for the Jets. Remains to be seen how much he helps them however.
The Jets lost virtually all their CB's & will have to replace them. The Jets may have improved because of Vick & Decker, but not significantly.

The Pats* didn't just lose Spikes, they lost him to the Bills, a team in their division. Spikes may be a one dimensional run defender, but he is the BEST run defender in the NFL.
Spikes had 86 tackles last year, third most on the Pats* That kind of production will be missed & the Pats* certainly missed Spikes against the Broncos in the playoffs.
The Pats* also lost Talib who at this point is at least as good as Revis, so the Revis signing is a wash. Revis does not improve the Pats* from what they were last year.
And the Pats* may well lose Vince Wilfork. If they do that will be a huge loss for them. It is ridiculous to think the Pats* have improved this offseason.
If Wilfork leaves, they will have lost 3 of their best players on defense. Even if he doesn't leave, losing Spikes alone makes that defense worse than it was last year.

Miami lost just about their entire OL. They will have a different player at about every position on the OL. Not good for a unit that needs continuity.
I expect the Fins offense to suffer because of the OL being in turmoil.
They also lost DT Paul Soliai their best defensive player by far & they lost Nolan Carroll their best CB. Earl Mitchell & Louis Delmas are a HUGE DOWNGRADE from Paul Soliai & Nolan Carroll.
Soliai & Carroll are NOT expendable players, they are players whose loss is not easy to replace & will be felt.
Having to replace an entire OL is reason alone to think the Fins take a step back this year, not forward.

The Pats* and Jets are about where they were last year, no big improvements made by either team.
The Pats* in fact are most likely worse on defense than last year, but they still have Brady.
The Fins are absolutely worse than last year.

The Bills lost Byrd, but like the Pats* with Talib & Revis, his loss is mitigated by Williams.
The Bills IMPROVED more than any other team in the AFC East with the addition of Spikes.
He is a difference maker that will be felt.
And Pepper Johnson is also a big addition to the Bills & a loss for the Pats*.

Vick's finished and doesn't have the passing skills/prowess to compete to that level in this league. He's well into his back 9 as well.

Agree with you on Wilfork, but until it happens ...

Can't agree with you on Talib v. Revis at all. We'll have to see how Revis is, but Talib has too many issues atttached to him and he simply can't stay on the field and be counted on for 16 games plus playoffs, which the Pats are always in. I'd take Revis over Talib too.

I also don't buy into this going from one team to another in the division. The Pats under Belicheat, who's unethical and has his integrity issues, is still a genius when it comes to defenses. They Pats' D hasn't been good for a couple of seasons yet we still can't beat them. Their O was average this season too.

As I mentioned, Spikes is hardly all upside.

Meanwhile, you talk about Miami's losses w/o mentioning their gains. I'm not sure that we can have a reasonable discussion if you're going to glaringly omit relevant facts. I have no idea what you're talking about re: Miami's OL. They lost one mediocre OG and picked up one of the best OTs out there in Brandon Albert. If that's not a significant upgrade on their line I have no idea what is. Also they signed Shelley Smith who's on or about par with Kerry. Incognito will be a loss, losing Martin's inconsequential.

But you have to weigh signings vs. losses and all you do is mention their losses.

While the Pats may be slightly worse on D, their O stands to take a massive step forward this year and it's been their O that has carried them since '05 or so. This is why they can't win another Super Bowl honestly, they don't have the D.

As to Byrd's loss being mitigate by Williams, I have no idea why you would think that. You honestly think that a player drafted in the 4th round from Nevad Reno in a crap conference, and one that had only 1 INT in his senior season and 4 total in 4 seasons there, is going to replace one of the top safeties in the game to any extent that Byrd's loss will be "mitigated?" ... Seriously?

This is where your argument crumbles. We at least need to be honest here. That's comparable to saying that Chris White will mitigate the loss of Spikes over in NE. So why won't that be the case over in NE?

As to Pepper Johnson, for starters, few assistants of Belicheat's have had success anywhere else, but honestly, you really think that an assistant position coach is going to make a difference like that? Again, you're reaching in a big way.

Let's just agree to disagree then.

I think that part of the problem in forums like this is the fans' actual understanding of football and talent as it relates to football.

You could have done this, but the very first google search produced this link;

He stuck his fellow dbs out to dry for the glory pick. His coverage skills were pedestrian, and was was so-so against runners. Why do you think that BUF never bothered to really send him over the LOS?

He balked at the tag, malingered, and finally BUF unloaded him.

Fletch- I agree that it's not as simple as plug in the new guys and get a cohesive, dominant force. I don't think all the signings will even start. Obviously, Anthony Dixon was brought in primarily for his success on special teams, and I think Rivers is going to fight with with Manny Lawson at SLB. I think he'll rotate playing OLB and backing up Spikes inside. Corey Graham is what he is - an excellent special teamer and a good 3rd corner. Nothing beyond that. He's better than Roby or Brooks in that spot, in my opinion. At guard, Williams is the great unknown for me. He played very well early in his career and then fell apart. It's strange and I have no clue as to what happened. I guess he's a reclamation project, which I don't like, but they feel he's better than Legursky. He's the one guy I'm most concerned about.

Spikes vs Byrd? How far will our pass D drop vs how much will run D improve? What's interesting is both players area of weakness is not quite as bad as the fans say. Byrd is not a liability against the run, as has been suggested many times, and Spikes is more efficient against the pass than given credit for. Still an area of weakness though. Spikes is the most efficient tackler in the NFL and arguably the best run stuffing MLB too. Byrd is a top 2 or 3 FS especially against the pass. I still think Williams will end up replacing Byrd rather than going to SS and I think he's a natural FS who will surprise. Not saying they're at the same level. Just saying he'll play very well. Our defense gave up over 150 rushing yards 7 times. Spikes will hopefully address that problem. It was necessary to beef that position and we filled our area of weakness with the best at addressing it. In obvious passing downs, they'll move Kiko inside. Overall, you may just see an improvement.

As for the 90's Bills, I agree with you on Polian's approach, just not who you mentioned. I believe Kelly and Reed were absolute studs in their time and both are hall of famers. Nothing average about their game. They were stylistically different from other players, but could dominate in ways others could not as well. Just my opinion.

OK, maybe I got a little carried away about Soliai & Carroll, but both were starters & will be missed by the Fins.

But the OL is the main reason the Fins will take a step back this year.

Yes Spikes is the best run defender in the NFL.

Yes Byrds loss is mitigated by Williams as it was the first 6 games Byrd missed last year.

I never said Decker is not an improvement, but he will have Geno or Vick throwing him the ball, not Peyton Manning.

In the playoff game, in addition to the 400 yds passing, the Broncos ran for 107 yds. Moreno avg 4.2 yds on 14 carries, Ball avg 3.6 yds on 12 carries. That is not a low average.

And the Broncos held the ball for 35:44 minutes in that game. The Pats* ABSOLUTELY MISSED Spikes in that game.

And yes even if Mayo comes back healthy, with the loss of Talib, Spikes & probably Wilfork who ripped his name tag off his locker & emptied it of all possessions, the Pats* defense will likely be worse next year.

How is that for posterity EDS?

The paper analysis, especially for just FA, is rarely, if ever, accurate. How many teams who are big spenders in March end up being mentioned in January and February?

Miami went 2-4 in the division in 2012, went on a big FA spending spree and ended up going 2-4 in the division in 2013. Meanwhile, Buffalo didn't do much in FA last year and went from 2-4 in the division in 2012 to 3-3 in 2013. That includes improving against the Dolphins themselves from 1-1 (2012) to 2-0 (2013).

I'm sorry there's so many things wrong in this post I don't know where to begin with...

jests lost all their scrub CB's, Cromartie played like crap last year. They upgraded their WR corps and got a QB who might be better than Smith.

cheatriots went to the Conference Championship without Wilfork, Talib is not as good as Revis, you're kidding yourself if you think Revis does not improve that team, he is elite, like it or not. They also signed Browner, so that secondary now looks scary.

fish are replacing almost their entire crappy OL, they signed a big time upgrade at LT, a better LG than ours and still have Pouncey, they still have work to do but they already have 3 upgrades. Soliai is not their best defensive player, he's a good run stopper and that's it. They re-signed Starks who's a better all-around DT. Carroll their best CB? are you serious? fish fans where happy to see him go. Oh, and you do realize they re-signed Grimes who's a top 3 CB in the NFL, right?

Meanwhile we lost a 3 time All-Pro safety and signed a bunch of scrubs.

I would love to hear how we are more improved than those teams...

The Jets upgraded their WR corps? Decker? then who. Remember Manning makes anyone a star as long as he is throwing it to them. The offensive skill positions in NY suck sac.

You are forgetting something important: Overall record.

fish improved their overall record from the previous year and missed the playoffs by 1 game thanks to their crappy OL, we remained under .500 for the 9th consecutive year.

Guess we won't be hearing about the Broncos and cheatrios come January since they went all in this offseason.

Decker is better than anything they previously had, so yeah, he's an upgrade.

His stats will drop no doubt, but he's more talented than the likes of Gates, Cribbs, Campbell, Jones, Kerley, etc.

How would Gates, Cribbs, Campbell, Jones, Kerley be with Manning? and is Decker an upgrade over Holmes?

Decker had 612 yds and 8 TD's without Manning, on top of that he had Tim freakin' Tebow throwing to him since week 5 of the 2011 season. That's quite a feat to be honest.

Considering Holmes only has one 1,000 season, is often injured and is a douchebag, yes, I think he's an upgrade.

Nelson had more yardage and 5 tds AND the Bills let him go... Hmmmmm.

I don't see how the Jets improved offensive skill positions that much. Vick? Meh. Mild improvement over Geno and Sanchez. Now IF the jets get Jones Drew and or D Jackson.. Then i would resoundingly agree with you.

Division record was used because that's what the whole thread is about - improving relative to teams within the division.

I wouldn't say NE went all in. Broncos, yes. The main point is that you don't build a team through FA. There have been a couple lucky ones who manage to get franchise QB's through FA (Saints, Broncos), and they do well, but the draft is how you really build a team and improve. That and adding free agents always looks more impressive on paper than it does on the field.

Hardly. NO coach would lift his leg on the "best run defender in the NFL" because of a mere personality spat. He was canned for a reason.

I agree somewhat, the Draft should be the base but if you manage to get an impact player via FA you do it. Also it's important to draft well and re-sign your good players, otherwise you're just creating holes every year, just like we have been doing it for the last 14+ years.

It was more than a personality spat.

Spikes did not respect Belicheck & the authority he tried to impose on everyone on the Pats*

Belichick wanted the players in NE in the offseason to workout.

Spikes defied that & stayed in Fla to workout.

He was also late to meetings.

Belicheck wanted him out because he did not want Spikes infecting the locker room.

I guess you don't follow the NFL outside of Cinci.

Yes, let's agree to disagree. I don't see how anyone could think the other three teams in the division improved more than the Bills.

IMO, the Fins absolutely regressed & the Pats* & Jets made no big improvements.

You will see Williams will have a GOOD year at FS & Spikes will be a terror for the Bills a HUGE improvement for the Bills over last year.

Sounds good. I think you'll see it at the end of the season however. It's funny, I don't see how anyone could think that we've improved more than the other three teams in the division. lol

Well, we have gone over the FA's already.

Aside from that, EJ will be the biggest factor in how much the Bills improve.

The Bills will improve as much or as little as EJ does.

Drafting well has been the biggest bane of the franchise over that period. Being generous, there have been maybe 5 guys going back to '99 that they probably should have kept, and that's not much.

We basically need 4 and probaly 5 wins in the division next year. We need to add at least one impact player to each side of the ball through the rest of fa and the draft. More than any of that though, we need better play from the qb position. Ej has to step up, or Thad if he goes down again.

An ot, someone at any level of the d, and some kind of play maker is what the team needs. Woods or Goodwin could step up up to be our playmaker, ot IMO can be day one through 3 in the draft, and a d impact guy can come day 1 or 2 in the draft.

My fantasy scenario is sign d jackson, trade up for clowney, and draft the best rt prospect available with our next highest pick. One of the elite tackles would be nice, but putting him at rt won't have any where the impact of a team going from a scrub at Lt to a stud.

Losing Byrd sucks, but if we have guys who make plays all over the d, what is we need is consistent blue collar d guys to compliment our stars on d, and spikes and possibly rivers fit that bill.

I think we will have fewer holes than last season (our secondary was a mess with injuries for about 7 total games) and we have guys who can ball on O and what should be a decent line. It all comes down to qb play and run d. Ej stepping up gets us the division shot, bad qb play means nothing else matters. I'm pretty excited to see how this all plays out, I think out team is in the best position they have been in in 10 years.
