He's not going to say publicly that this is a 5 year rebuild because that's basically admitting to the fans that we will suck for 5 years.

The Sabres are below the cap floor and have to spend in FA, especially if they make Leino a compliance buyout (which HAS to be done). So MAYBE that could speed up the time frame slightly. But this team is so bad that even getting the top 3 FA's available this year won't make us competitive.

second is just fine. if the sabres won the lottery, they would have taken ekblad. the thing is, they dont need ekblad. but, if ekblad falls to them at 2, it makes the pick more justified and look better, like a steal. and if they dont get ekblad, but reinhart or bennett because ekblad is taken, then the sabres get a future top 6 forward (at worst, i expect both of those forwards to spend large parts of their career on the first line) to add to the cupboard of impressive prospects they already have.

theres also people who believe that for the oilers, its ekblad or bust. so if ekblad goes number 1, edmontons first could be had. just something to consider if thats true.

I think he meant that if Ekblad doesn't go #1, the Oilers will sell the farm to move up and get him, but I'm not sure. I'm kind of tired of stockpiling picks anyway. At some point we need proven talent.

and yet the top prospect in the draft is a defenseman. Sure it hurts losing the chance at the top spot but I think getting one of the "Sam's" will do the Sabres well. I'm leaning toward Reinhart.

Let Leino go, sign UFA Paul Statsny to a mega deal and give Stewart a raise to get and a veteran "backup" goalie us to the cap floor and do little else that way we still have a shot at McDavid or Eichel.

We don't have a shot at McDavid. Even if we are last again next year, the NHL is just going to give it to some Southern team where the fans don't show up, like they did this year.

This is why I don't agree with the blow it all up philosophy. To get good in three years you can't miss at all. When you gut the team you have nothing, which means you need to hit on all your top draft picks and acquire solid FA's. Top FA's might not be interested in playing for bottom tier teams so you're not going to have a great success rate there, you also don't have a goalie.

It's going to take 5 years and you'll need to be patient with all parties because you can't get off this track now.

Sabres might have a goalie in neuvirth. He's a wild card. Outstanding talent and decent numbers, just not much playing time. He's 25 so its not like he's behind the curve.

we don't even need big names, we need a peca type soldier that works incredibly hard for Nolan. Then nolan's message to the youngsters takes shape a little more. once they can move ennis and hodgson and their current top 6 to the middle six, the sabres will be a little bit better.
