Report: Texans' Boselli to retire

HOUSTON (AP) -- Houston Texans offensive left tackle Tony Boselli is planning to retire, according to newspaper and broadcast reports.

Boselli, a five-time Pro Bowler, was taken by the Texans as the first player in the 2002 expansion draft, but has never played for Houston. A shoulder injury sidelined him for the entire 2002 season, and most of the 2001 season.

Texans five-time Pro Bowl offensive left tackle Tony Boselli, who has been contemplating retirement, is expected to announce the end of his eight-year career by the end of the week, sources told the Chronicle on Tuesday night.

Boselli, 31, declined comment when reached at his home Tuesday night, and Texans general manager Charley Casserly was unavailable.

The decision to quit would end Boselli's bid to return after sitting out almost two years because of three operations on his left shoulder. The Texans used their first pick in the 2002 expansion draft on Boselli, who missed the Texans' first season after playing in just three games the previous year for the Jaguars.

Members of the Texans' front office, coaches, trainers and medical staff were optimistic Boselli would make a successful comeback this year, but indications are it will not happen. Boselli took a big step in his recovery at the team's offseason program, which included a three-day minicamp and 14 on-field coaching sessions, but he was unable to participate fully.

Boselli says botched surgery forced his retirement
HOUSTON (AP) -- A botched arthroscopic operation on Tony Boselli's left shoulder that should have made him ready to play last summer instead forced him into retirement this week, the former All-Pro tackle told reporters Friday.

Boselli, 31, who never played a down for the Houston Texans after being their top pick in last year's expansion draft, addressed the local media for the first time since word of his decision to retire was made public earlier this week. He said he believes the November 2001 surgery by team doctors with his former team, Jacksonville, was the beginning of the end.

"I have a lot of questions and concerns about how that was handled because my left shoulder was better before I went into surgery than it ever has been since," said Boselli, adding that treatment and a follow-up procedure by Texans team surgeon Dr. Walter Lowe a year ago has helped, but the shoulder hurts "24 hours a day." ...
