11 days to go.

Who do you think will go number 1 overall, and who do you think the Bills will draft?

Houston selects...Johnny Manziel. Can you blame a new coach for drafting a QB first?

Buffalo selects...Taylor Lewan. Can you blame Doug Marrone and Nate Hackett for wanting to protect the quarterback first?

I think EJ Manuel has a lot of offensive weapons to work with. Protect him first, run the ball, and let him get comfortable in the pocket.

That's it, done. Locked in, all of my chips are on the table. Without an offensive line that can protect the QB and run the ball, divas don't matter as much. The Bills biggest nemesis, New England has a 14 year history of success and they've always been able to do two things - run the ball, and protect Brady, save one injury that ended his season.

Give EJ Manuel Megatron, Tony Gonzalez, Andre Reed and Jerry Rice in their prime with an offensive line made out of Yancy's Fancy Swiss cheese.

No offensive line = no offense.

If the Texans take Manziel 1st overall they're making a mistake. As Manziel has questions about his game and isn't ideal sized. I know everyone is going to point at Russell Wilson but truth be told Wilson wasn't that made the Seahawks alone win that title. I posted in another thread, in half of the Seahawks' regular season games last year Wilson had 0 or 1 TD. To me the Texans would be better suited with Clowney or Mack. I say that because as good as JJ Watt arguably is he alone isn't good enough to make his defense above average. Not to mention they play in a division against the Titans and Jaguars who lost their primary RBs from last year and as of yet find a suitable replacement and have question marks at QB. The Texans at least should have a healthy Arian Foster back. In other words they don't have to put up a bunch of points to win except when they play Indy and as good as Manziel is he isn't nearly Andrew Luck good so the better their D can contain Luck the less they have to worry about outscoring him. It's one reason I actually liked the Bills offseason as we manged to target where were weak (LB and nickel CB) and address other important needs (#2 WRs and ST). Of course we did lose Byrd and Pettine which are big losses but hopefully Shwartz can do what Pettine did which was to get the most of the talent which we have on the roster which on the whole better than last year. In terms of 1st Round picks, I've chimed in time and time again about previous rookie TE/WRs performance and more than not they aren't great statistically. Whaley said himself that if you can nabe an OT and pencil him in as a 10 year starter why wouldn't you do that? That could happen if Matthews or Lewan fall to us and am all for it. On the off chance they're gone then sure I might take Ebron but I don't expect him to get more than 40 catches 400 yards or 4 TDs which are solid numbers but not enough to put us in the playoffs alone and think Austin Seferian-Jenkins could put up those numbers just as easily but done as a 2nd Round pick.

I actually compares this draft favorably to the 2011 draft, another one that's iffy on QBs but otherwise considered deep.

The amount of talent in that first round is pretty nuts

In 2011, it was widely viewed sure fire about 6 top prospects. Cam Newton was a better QB prospect than any of this year's QB candidates, but by no means a Luck/Griffin type of guys; in fact because of his one year wonder at college, he's more viewed as a long term prospect.

A case of study can be made on Cleveland that year -- they did the unthinkable and traded way down. They did get quite a haul of draft picks but overall, because mainly of THE quarterback issue, 3 years later, they still draft in the top 5. Atlanta did no better, either. You can argue they paid too much for Julio Jones to wind up where they are today.

This might just be one case but I think it is representative. The best thing for the Bills in my mind is to stay where they are if they can get a player regardless position of calibre of Green/Aldon Smith/JJ Watts/Peterson; if not, then trade back but don't go back too far so that they can still get a very good starter. If you are going to trade up to one of the sure fire guys, don't trade away your 1st round pick of future years --- see the Cleveland example, you may need it for your QB when you you don't have an established one.

A side note on Whaley involved in trade up scenario the Steelers: the Steelers made one significant trade up the last decade and that was for Polamalu. Whaley was resposnible for scouting and evaluating defensive players during that time. So I'm pretty sure he was consulted when they decided to give up two extra picks to move up of getting the future HOF safety.

Obviously things can change over time, but the 2011 draft might shape up to be one of the best classes in history.
