    Draft Day Unsubstantiated Rumors

There are going to be a few of these between now and the #9 pick, may as well centralize them all.

Saw this buzzing around figured I'd pass it along though I think its almost entirely bogus.

Buffalo Bills rumors have been churning for days now, with sources close to the organization saying the team is working hard to trade up to the top of Thursday’s NFL draft. New rumors say it may take trading electric but inconsistent running back C.J. Spiller to do so. Unsourced rumors online are circulating that the […]

Unsourced rumors online are circulating that the Bills are talking to the Houston Texans about shipping off Spiller, their No. 9 pick and another high round pick in this year’s draft to get to the top spot. Doing so would allow the Bills to take Jadeveon Clowney, who the team’s front office views as a once-in-a-generation talent.

This week the Buffalo Bills rumors kicked around to Buffalo Rumblings, which broke down the team’s running back situation but didn’t report on any specific trade talks.

Ok- if we do that, who plays RB? I like Jackson but he can't carry the load by himself.

IF they did that, you would have to assume they like the RB's that they anticipate being available in rounds 2-4.

I would think that Jerry Hughes would be more attractive to Houston...

The topic of the thread says it all. Honestly I think people that make these things up don't understand that RB values in today's NFL are very small. I mean look at how year after year RBs are getting drafted later and later. Also year after year RBs like CJ2K are released and not traded. Guys like Darren Sproles are traded for 5th Round picks making Spiller's value around a 3rd Round pick at best. I honestly think most rumor spreaders hear one rumor (that the Bills and Texans are in talk of trading) and tosses in conjecture to make "new rumors". As imagine they think we want to move Spiller because of the talk we inquired about CJ2K before he was traded and that the Eagles had interest in trading for Spiller. Until proven otherwise I feel any trade talk about the Bills moving up to Houston's spot are really coming out of Houston so they can try and get more out of Atlanta and/or the Bills are spreading the word so a guy that they want at 9 (my thought is Matthews) slides to them.

i'd rather give up spiller than a boat load of picks. but i don't see that happening.

my hope is that we stay at 9. that in some ways will be a small victory.

We might as well trade Kiki now as he didn't play every defensive snap last year and there's no way he can keep up that pace in 2014. [/sarcasm]

I think that Kiko did, in fact, play every snap last year.

Anyway, the speculation and rumors will end soon, and thank God.

I'm not on board with trading Spiller or Stevie, though.

I'd gladly trade Spiller if it would bring anything of value.

However, in today's NFL, RBs don't bring much value and getting a 4th round pick for him is something I'd never advocate.

My question is why don't the Texans think Clowney is a once in a generation player & draft him themselves?

Would you trade the right to draft Bruce Smith?

They already have a pass rushing specialist DE who plays havoc on other team's O-lines.

They already had the ability to maintain a second very good DE that ended up coming here instead.

I think based on their history and team, they have shown that they don't value having two of the same type of players on the d-line and the money it entails tying up. So that makes them not as high on actually drafting Clowney not what they think of him as a player.

                      Make sense?

Maybe they will take him. They might just be trying to see if someone will sell the farm for him and if they don't get the right offer they'll stay at 1.

I think the Texans think they have a "Bruce Smith" in JJ Watt but they lack a Jim Kelly yet there are no Kelly's in this draft and why looking to trade down to acquire more picks. Personally I think Watt's a bit over-rated and the Texans should take Clowney and/or Mack. In terms of the Bills, we have Mario Williams and Williams/Dareus giving us one of the more formidable D-lines in the NFL already. Sure Clowney make it even better but not at the expense of losing out to a possible game changer TE (Ebron) or plug and play tackle (Matthews or Lewan) and whomever we could take later this year and possibly next year. I mean everyone points at adding Kelly is what turned the Bills around in the late 80s but if ask me what turned us around then were the 1987 and 1988 drafts. As in 1987 we acquired: Corneilius Bennett*, Shane Conlan, Nate Odomes, Leon Seals, Keith McKeller, Howard Ballard and 1988 gave us Thurman Thomas, Jeff Wright and Carlton Bailey.

You and I liked the Spiller pick and I love Spiller. But after this year he has the player option and may be gone anyway. And RB's are a dime a dozen these days. Add in that we will be drafting a RB in a mid round (I hope its Seastrunk)... There could be worse things to do than trading Spiller.
