Monos: Jerry Hughes and Manny Lawson will play DE

During his interview on Preston Brown, Monos said Hughes and Lawson are 1 and 2 on the depth chart for RDE. Both of the are 3-4 OLB and have not been asked to play DE on 1st or 2nd down. I don't like this for our run defense.

I think Lawson plays the run well.

I'm glad you think so. Since neither of them have played 4-3 DE, I have my doubts about this particular plan.

He's still a pass rusher. The only difference with him between a 34 and a 43 are the letters next to his position. Nothing will change much with these two.

Agreed, but I'm not sure I see anyone left that would be better than Hughes at this point.

Agreed, but I'm not sure I see anyone left that would be better than Hughes at this point.

Lots of interesting prospects left, maybe they don't start over Hughes but they have talent.

So a 250lb prototypical 3-4 OLB is the same as a 275 lb prototypical RDE? Just change the letters, and BAM!

Hughes played exclusively in passing situations in a 34. He will do the same in a 43. He's still coming from the right side with his hand in the ground. How does the "olb" or "de" designation change that? And Lawson will still replace him in running situations.

Well, Lawson is a SOLID tackler. And he has good size.

I don't think he will have any problem setting the edge & stopping the run.

um they just extended olive err i mean alan branch to 3yrs at 3per so im guessing he might have something to say about whos playing run defense from that position

If Hughes struggles to transition, which is likely given the history in Indy, I wonder if Cleveland would be a trade partner. The thing is, Cleveland has no one that could help, so it would be for a draft pick. If so, who is out there in FA? I'm thinking that if the right guy gets freed up in cap casualty season, a Hughes trade could happen.

Lawson is lighter in the britches than Hughes. 240 is good size for a DE? Only if you are Dwight Freeney.

So, he has his hand in the dirt. He is still the same guy he was last year.

He will probably play on passing downs.
