Strengths Plays smart and has a good feel for the game -- eyes, anticipation and awarenesss. Plays with discipline and takes a consistent approach. Good route recognition. Lines up in the slot and is quick and agile enough to handle dynamic receivers. Sorts through route combinations and maintains positioning. Good leaping ability -- competes for the ball in the air. Has jammer experience on special teams.

Weaknesses Has small hands, short arms and a thin frame, especially in the lower body. Limited press strength to match up against bigger receivers. Often plays to the boundary. Has some tightness in his hips that shows re-directing -- allows separation at the break point. Does not step up and take on blocks and overall game lacks physicality.

Draft Projection Rounds 3-4

Bottom Line Good-sized, smart, ballhawking zone corner who plays fast and could bring immediate value as a nickel back and contribute on special teams.

STRENGTHS: Cockrell is much more physical than he looks. He has a lean, wiry build but doesn't shy from getting physical at the line of scrimmage, wasting little time in pursuit or attacking blocks. He is a bit of an agitator in coverage, frequently tugging to impede receivers without fully extending to draw the flag. His awareness is an asset as Cockrell locates the ball and shows burst to close. Characterized as a coach on the field. He possesses quick hands and good timing to rip at the ball as it arrives, as indicated by the number of passes he's broken up (53) and intercepted (12) over his career. Intercepted a pass in the final moments of the East-West Shrine Game to seal the victory.
WEAKNESSES: At his best in zone coverage when he can break downhill on the ball, as Cockrell does not possess ideal fluidity or straight-line speed. Further, Cockrell is a bit all or nothing when it comes to run support. He reads the action quickly and is decisive in the angles he takes towards the ball, which leads him to be too easily blocked out of the action when ball-carries see him coming. Too often lunges as a tackler and finds himself on the ground.

COMPARES TO: Derrick Martin, Chicago Bears - Cockrell doesn't possess elite athleticism but he locates the ball quickly and has the height scouts are looking for in today's defensive backs. It could be a struggle to find his niche, but he's overcome challenges before.

No problem here, we needed a DB, IMO.

Just read the strengths people posted, I like a DB who has a lot of interceptions. Bodes well for his chances of creating turnovers on the next level.

http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2014/4/3/5579088/2014-nfl-draft-prospects-bashaud-breeland-ross-cockrell-visit

The Buffalo Bills (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/buffalo-bills) added two defensive backs to their list of pre-draft visitors (http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2014/4/2/5574050/nfl-draft-2014-buffalo-bills-pre-draft-visitors) on Thursday, bringing in Clemson defensive back Bashaud Breeland and Duke cornerback Ross Cockrell, the team announced (http://www.buffalobills.com/news/article-1/Pre-draft-visits-continue-with-DB-Breeland-and-CB-Cockrell/cacf9b1e-8982-4c05-bf6d-eaaa3d7cbe9f). They are the second and third defensive backs to come to team head quarters this spring, following Wednesday's visit from Ohio State cornerback Bradley Roby.Breeland is the better-known of the two players; the three-year starter at Clemson moved from safety to cornerback for his final season. The 5'11", 197-pound Breeland should be a day two selection after notching 74 tackles and 17 pass breakups in 2013.

Cockrell was one of Duke's defensive captains and had a good week at the Shrine Game. He has greatly improved his 40-yard dash time this offseason, unofficially clocking under 4.4 at his pro day. He is known for being physical with receivers at the line of scrimmage, as well. He is seen as a third-day pick, but with his improved 40 time, could sneak into the fourth round (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2014/3/26/5548992/nfl-pro-day-results-texas-duke-indiana-cody-latimer-ross-cockrell).

Nickel Back/Free Safety who can play Special Teams. Not surprised they went with a corner, but would have loved to have one of those OGs. I guess they felt there wasn't someone in there capable of starting any time soon. Either that or they feel we're OK there? I hope not...

I think it is more anticipation of Freddie's decline. Spiller is not a workhorse and needs a 50/50 split. We started to see what happens when you give him the ball more. He breaks down.

Don't Panic
05-10-2014, 11:44 AM
I think they see him as a good compliment to Spiller after this year. My guess is we're about to see Fred Jackson's swan song as a Bill.

Pick with be a 2015 4th since he won't see the field a lot this year. He is only 22... turns 23 in a few days. Could be a nice coup.

I'm ok with the pick becuase after the 3rd round you are basically just throwing darts. Go BPA and hope for the best. But we already have a 4 man DB rotation set with Gilmore, McKelvin, Graham, and Robey and I don't see DB as a real need. Certainly not as much as guard, halfback (at the time), quarterback, or tight end.

His best contribution IMO would be to play special teams enough to make Easley expendable, so we can keep a useful wideout in that spot.

I think the logic here is that this allows McKelvin to move inside with Robey and completes the CB rotation for the spread look. Im not sure if Graham plays S or CB yet.

I thought the logic of giving McKelvin the deal he got was that he was ready to play outside. And he did alright there this year.

The logic of the McKelvin deal was (at the time) that he was a good return guy and played really good CB inside and outside. In today's game it doesn't really matter where you play at CB if you're in the top 3 of the rotation which he is.
