I don't think we're going to see any more NFL Draft's in April after this.........

We all know the NFL is the king of American sports. But, damn.....

NFL Draft's Huge TV Ratings Remind Us Football Is Still King In America

The first round of the NFL Draft posted a huge 6.8 overnight rating on ESPN, the highest rating ever for the draft.

Per NFL.com's Brian McCarthy (https://twitter.com/NFLprguy/status/464760804043005954), the NFL Network combined with ESPN to draw an 8.64 rating, which represents a 50 percent increase from 2013 figures.

A 50 percent increase!

What is it about late April vs. early May that causes such a huge fluctuation in viewership?

Timing is everything.

I'm not convinced that May had anything to do with that.

May is TV Sweeps month. With ratings like they got, you can bet the draft will never be in April again.

Don't have to worry about small market Bills fans watching the draft next year.

The NFL is going to push back the draft until the end of May next year, and why not?

It's a ratings extravaganza and we clearly don't give a **** what they do, we watch it anyway.

you may be right, but unfortunately the NFL won't see it that way. They'll push this thing back to f***ing July if it made them more money

When football isn't on, every other sport is basically cheap filler.

In fairness there were only 2 games on in the nhl and both were regional

Still, the fact that 6+ people watched a sporting event without the sporting event part for every 1 that watched a 2nd round NHL playoff game? That says something.

Not really when you consider one of those teams was Canadien and the other 2 teams were from LA.

It could be Gretzky vs. Leimuix for the Cup and it still wouldn't have gotten those ratings.

i think the NFL does right by the teams...the general feedback was the two weeks was an irritant to the GM's, scouts, etc. Once you factor in you have 2 less weeks to sign everyone, get into yourconditioning programs etc, we'll see if there was any big drawbacks.

I had thought sweeps only applied to the big networks and not cable networks.

The problem with the draft is it's anticlimactic. After the first round, ratings drop drastically. What they should do is START with Mr. Irrelevant and END with the top pick. Think about it. It's genius!

To be fair, I don't think LA has two original teams.

They just snake everybody else's.

it would also be nuts if it wasn't based on study and scouting, but simply a lottery ball. Obviously would never happen, but it would be compelling television.

The best players go first.

I don't think the draft was anticlimactic at all.

The peak ratings for the 2014 NFL Draft was in the middle of the first round, when everyone was waiting to see where Johnny Manziel would go.

And ratings peaked again when Michael Sam was drafted in the 7th round.

What's the NBA?

A pro basketball organization that used to be interesting. A one Michael Jordan showed up, and then things like palming and traveling were ignored. They instituted a 3 point low percentage shot, so working the ball into the forecourt diminished. Instead of a 5 man game, it's now 3 players feeding 2. Or 2 feeding 3. The ethic of the game gravitated towards gangsta culture.
