Time for Van to join Bills’ Wall of Fame

    — It was the first meeting of the Ralph Wilson Stadium Wall of Fame committee since the Bills’ team owner and facility’s namesake passed away in March.

Oh, he hadn’t been at the actual gathering for three years due to health concerns. But even in his 90s, Ralph’s input was a major part of our selection process. He didn’t have a vote, but always offered his thoughts, which we strongly considered ... though occasionally taking a different path.
    On Wednesday it was different.
Our group is down to eight with the passing of legendary Buffalo News sports writer Larry Felser last year and the absence of former Channel 2 sports director Ed Kilgore, who now works for Sabres owner Terry Pegula.
That left retired play-by-play man Van Miller, his successor, John Murphy, former Bills’ trainer Eddie Abramoski, one-time Director of Archives Denny Lynch, Mark Gaughan and Milt Northrup of the News, Leo Roth from the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle and yours truly to make the choice.
    It didn’t take long.
Oh, we had our list of deserving players ... but a suggestion from Murphy clinched it instantly.
“Murph” allowed that none of our other candidates belonged on the “Wall” more than Miller.

    Duh!

We listened to Miller for all those years. Sadly the last couple, where he struggled, seem to stick the most. But every time I have to listen to that idiot, John Murphy, I cannot help but pine for Van Miller in his hey-day. Van made lousy Bills teams seem exciting. "Braxton pounding up the middle for 3!"

A bit off topic, because I haven't lived in Buffalo for quite a long time, but my favorite Van Miller called game that I listened to was him calling the Niagara basketball game when Calvin Murphy hung a 68 on Syracuse.

He was absolutely stupefied. In shock.

Love to hear replays of him calling great Bills' moments.

Since he retired in 2003, I guess so because I can't think of many good moments, let alone great, since then

All of OJ's accomplishments were broadcast by Meltzer, Rutkowski and Azar.

I actually met Meltzer when I worked in Philly. I used to have to deal with a lot of media types.

He told me he absolutely loved the WNY area, the food, the falls, everything about it except for the cold winters.

He said that's the only reason he and his wife left the area.

To be fair he was calling the wrong players as far back as the Comeback game, IIRC the NFL hilites of that game with his voice, and they give it Carwell Gardner, no its Kenny Davis (35 doesn't look like 23 and Gardner was a bit beefier than Kenny D). Anyways, I heard the complete second half of that game as presented by WGR back in 2012 and damn it was exciting.

I know the call you're talking about, but I always thought he said "may give it to Carwell here... No, it's Davis running left," as if he was trying to predict the play...

I can hear his voice in these quotes. Good announcing is pretty much a thing of the past.

Van did a nice job with the Braves back in the day too.

I met him only once, at the Pier one summer day.

My buddy asked him what he thought of the OJ thing, his response: "Just tragic!"

I don't think Van should go up on the Wall, He's got a whole section of seating named after him The "Van Miller Club" in sect. 235-238
