ESPN.com is reporting we've extended BM's contract with an option after the third year. Good News, let's work on Winfield next.

The former Pittsburg (Kans.) State standout can also handle the kickoff duties.

At the numbers provided, if this guy can net over 38 yards a punt we got a deal!!

Why is that article dated July 3?

Its a typing mistake, if you look here (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=buf) you'll see it at the bottom with todays date.

i think i heard there was an option on year 3 just in case. congrads moorman. i remember his first year here, i thought he was going to be a major weak link. he had a solid season that year, despite slowing down towards the end. He seems to get better evey year. Can't wait to see him after another full offseason.

It will be interesting to see if we try him on kickoffs in TC.

His cap number is a palatible $742,857 and doesn't change by much each year, even after the option payment before the 2006 season. His dead cap would be minimal as well. Very fair contract on both ends :)

I have a hypothetical question-

Let' say a player like Moorman signs a deal for 7 years and his salary never exceeds 800,000 any of the years.

Then, when the NFLPA has their next labor agreement with owners, the Vet minimum gets raised to 1,000,000 per year. Does that void the remaining years on the deal since it does not pay the minimum?

Are old contracts still honored at the salary negotiated?

:dozer:

Prior to last season(2002), the NFLPA and NFL signed a CBA extension that included a provision that set minimum salaries for a number of yrs, however, if a player has a salary that ends up below the minimum for that players NFL experience, it is automatically raised to the minimum :)

which happens with many players every year...p. price got a raise last year because of it.

It won't happen as before because the CBA extension set the minimums thru 2007:

From CBA extension:

Minimum salaries will no longer be increased each year by the percentage increase in DGR to a maximum of 10%. Instead, Paragraph 5 Minimum Salaries are set at the following specific amounts for the years indicated ($ in 000's)

The discrepancy was related to percentage increase, if someone guessed wrong, the salary negotiated was too low(this was especially true for rookies)

So do we have a valid chance to sign winfield is there should still be enough cap room

There's cap room. It all comes down to whether Winfield and his agent want to negotiate or try and enter FA. We could "tag" Winfield if we so choose, but I wouldn't. I think he'll re-sign because the FA market for CBs is deep.

I see Donahoe telling Winfield to get an offer from a team but to give him a chance to match it.
