Martin Brodeur set to hit the market on July 1st

He's 42 and wants to play one more year. Where do you think he lands?

"I want to play one more season and I want to see what's out there."

Brodeur, who turned 42 last month, said he hasn't completely shut the door on returning to the Devils but feels like it's most likely he'll be elsewhere next season.

"I've had a lot of good conversations with the Devils, but I'm not inclined at going back at this point," said Brodeur, whose contract expires June 30. "I just feel that with Schneids (goalie Cory Schneider) the organization has to move on. Me being around might be tough a little bit for them. I don't completely put it out of the question (returning to New Jersey), but I don't want to mess up the cards for the Devils.

"At the end of the day, it doesn't matter where I go next, I'm always going to be a Devil. I'm always going to come back to the organization. But I want to play one more year. So I'll see what's out there."

It would never happen but how great would it be if the Sabres signed him, think about it Hasek's jersey is being retired and is going up to the rafters next season and if the Sabres sign Broduer the Sabres could say that THEY ARE THE ONLY TEAM IN THE WHOLE NHL THAT HAD THE TWO BEST GOALIES THAT EVER PLAYED THE GAME! HASEK AND BRODUER!

Wherever he goes, it sure as hell won't be to a team that has zero chance of winning the Cup next season.

what team that was in the playoffs felt like goaltending let them down so much that they need a 42 yr old playing? maybe pitt. they can have fluery play the season and start the playoffs and if he shows signs of cracking, then they put brodeur in?

the thing about brodeur is can he survive in a system that isnt defense first/defense only? the devils have always been a defense first team, forcing long shots, which is easy for marty or whoever is in the devils net to save (look at some of the devils backups numbers in recent years. they are always good)...

not hating on marty. hes a hall of famer. but he was fortunate to play on a defense first team.

http://www.hockey-reference.com/lead...ct_career.html still he had himself a great career.

it did. and brodeur is an anomaly. coming from quebec, the place that perfected the butterfly. and hes not a butterfly goaltender. dont get me wrong, brodeur was a great goalie. but if you look at his stats, outside of GAA and wins, which are more reflective of team play, not his, they are pretty good. not out of this world. save percentage is the best way to gauge a goaltender, and for the most part, marty has been pretty down the middle of that category.

                  Look who's number 2...

NHL goalies who hold the all-time record for the best save percentage in NHL. All-time save percentage leaders for NHL goalies.

yup. save percentage has skyrocketed after the 04-05 lockout. for a variety of reasons. equipment changes, and style changes being the largest. the goaltender position evolved almost overnight.

The NHL has done every thing it can to add more scoring to the games.

The goalies of the 90's had it much easier.

Not really. Goaltending has evolved significantly in a short amount of time. Butterfly pushes and the reverse VH have made cross crease movement significantly easier and thus more saves. Cowlings have changed resulting in better angle of attack. And lundqvist using prototype pads means even more changes are coming that are pro goalie.
