i thought a news and notes and rumors thread would be fun for the NHL offseason. just a general thread for trades and moves and whatnot.

heres the first.

the leafs are aggressively pursuing jumbo joe thornton from the sharks.

Downinfloflo

Spezza would be an upgrade at the #1 center position for (15) NHL teams based off of last seasons numbers.

He would be an upgrade for just about everyone at the #2 center position.

A break from Ottawa would do a world of good for him, And they could find another guy to point their finger at.

The market is looking like it could be flooded with top talent on the block this off-season, Could drive prices down big time.

Bob McKenzie (https://twitter.com/TSNBobMcKenzie/status/478629955752824832): The Avalanche sent Paul Stastny a multi-year offer a couple of weeks ago. There has been no talks since, but it’s expected they will start soon. Stastny has let it be known (https://twitter.com/TSNBobMcKenzie/status/478632408606978048) that he wants to stay in Colorado, but would he take a hometown discount? Stastny’s last contract was for five years at $6.6 million per season. Guessing that the Avalanche would like it to be (https://twitter.com/TSNBobMcKenzie/status/478633216085983232) worth less. He could get more on the open market.

Bob McKenzie (https://twitter.com/TSNBobMcKenzie/status/478563389040373761): The Blackhawks have told Michal Handzus that he won’t be coming back next year. Will be a free agent.

Bob McKenzie (https://twitter.com/TSNBobMcKenzie/status/478565831333261312): Looking like Senators free agent Stephane Da Costa will head to the KHL next season as the Senators wouldn’t offer him a one-way contract.

Steve Zipay (https://twitter.com/stevezipay/status/478568756755832832): Rangers Marc Staal is heading into the last year of his contract and is hoping to get an extension before the start of next season, but it’s “not end of the world” if it doesn’t happen.

Andrew Gross (https://twitter.com/AGrossRecord/status/478571253411102720): Rangers defenseman Anton Stralman wants to return, but cites security for his family will be the top priority. The Rangers may not have the money to get it done.

Andrew Gross (https://twitter.com/AGrossRecord/status/478579769207160832): Pending UFA Brian Boyle will be looking for a bigger role than what the Rangers are offering.

Adam Vingan (https://twitter.com/AdamVingan/status/478588421271982080): Vingan wonders is pending UFA Tomas Vokoun would be interested in being the Capitals backup next season, reuniting with Barry Trotz and Mitch Korn.

William DePaoli (https://twitter.com/TIOPS_DePaoli/status/478609172989108225): The Penguins will reach out to their free agents that they are not interested in re-signing.

Jason Gregor (https://twitter.com/JasonGregor/status/479025856933679104): If P.K. Subban was only asking for $6.5 million, the Canadiens would have already signed him. Source said (https://twitter.com/JasonGregor/status/479026848441958400) a couple weeks ago that Subban’s camp asked for over $8 million a season.

subban struck me as a guy who is still very young. he is determined to go end to end when asked to like an adult rec league star. and he doesn't seem to know his body. there were times in that rangers game where he was gased and was still pushing to go end to end. and that made it that much easier to defend him.

on one hand, kudos to him doing whatever the team asks of him.

on the other, he isn't such a complete player that you can feel comfortable putting 10% of your cap into him. Perhaps he can grow into that and if the cap keeps growing, it'll be a good contract.

there was just something about how loose he carried the puck at times. and his skating was very much like the best kid in school who never followed any of the drills because he was a natural athlete. there was one game where he ran into the net without pressure. and i don't like how he takes his hand off the stick to touch the ice on some turns.

i'm not saying he isn't one of the better defensemen. I am saying i'd through that kind of money or more at doughtey. i would feel like i'm taking a little risk with subban.

“Paul does what he does. He’s a checking center, best in the league at faceoffs and penalty killing. To me this is the good and bad news. Paul Gaustad is way more effective when our team has a lead, way more effective on our team as a shutdown guy. Give us the leads in the third period and the leads out of the gate and I think his role is better.”

They need to get bigger. They can’t compete with just Backes”

Hope Smoke (https://twitter.com/Hope_Smoke/status/479326463791861760): Doug MacLean: “In NY Thornton would have to be the guy. Stepan’s a good #2 and Brassard is a real good #3″

you are forgetting ehrhoffs cap hit is very team friendly, and hes a second pairing d-man at worst. yes, a team like the oilers would probably welcome an ehrhoff type player with open arms.

also, perron has never scored 30 goals in a season. came close, but hasnt done it.

No it's not....It's for 10 years and anyone who trades for him has the threat of a recapture penalty hanging over their heads.

brad richards must be the happiest guy in NYC today. HE's getting like $50MM upfront for 3 years of work.

if i may advise him, his best bet is to move to a contender like the kings for $1MM-2MM for a 2 year contract, get the healthy scratch for half the season, get let loose in March as a 3rd line/4th line center, play the minimum needed to be engraved on the cup, and then kick back into retirement as you date the hollywood elite actresses.

Also, the recapture penalties go to the team that signed him. Cap geek has a calculator on it.

So a second pairing dman on a team with weak defense for a second line winger. Seems like a fair deal.

What's up with this Hartnell for Umberger trade? Has Philly lost it? Why would they ever make such a trade? It makes no sense on the surface.

The Philadelphia Flyers have traded forwardScott Hartnell to the Columbus Blue Jackets for forward R.J. Umberger and a 2015 4th round pick.

The 32-year old Hartnell was drafted 6th overall in the 2000 draft by the Nashville Predators. Hartnell has five years left on his contract totaling $22.5 million and a cap hit of $4.75 million.

The 32-year old Umberger was drafted 16th overall in the 2001 draft by the Vancouver Canucks. Umberger has three years left on his contract totaling $13.5 million and a cap hit of $4.6 million.

Thoughts from media:

Dan Rosen (https://twitter.com/drosennhl/status/481111212256940032): “I can’t rationalize this on what we know. Maybe Hartnell begged for a trade. Maybe the Flyers wanted him gone. Maybe….just maybe.”

Elliotte Friedman (https://twitter.com/FriedgeHNIC/status/481110624265449472): “No salary retention for either team in CLB/PHI trade…clean break both ways”

Chris Johsnton (https://twitter.com/reporterchris/status/481110151777116160): “It’s worth noting that Scott Hartnell waived a no-movement clause to join #CBJ.”

Dan Rosen (https://twitter.com/drosennhl/status/481108255175757825): “I can’t describe the reasoning behind this deal from the Flyers perspective. I have to dive into some details but on surface I don’t get it.”

Justin Bourne (https://twitter.com/jtbourne/status/481108144995594240): “You do have to respect Philly’s decision to get appreciably worse for the same cap hit tho”

Gus Katsaros (https://twitter.com/KatsHockey/status/481107823523536896): “Hartnell relies on brute strength to power his way to the net instead of a finesse approach. That’s going to wear down with age.”

Nicholas W. Goss (https://twitter.com/NickGossNESN/status/481107807887163392): “I like the Hartnell-Umberger trade from the Flyers perspective. Hartnell’s contract was only going to get worse.”

David Pagnotta (https://twitter.com/TheFourthPeriod/status/481106963728588801): “Nice move for the Jackets… Hartnell should win over the Columbus crowd pretty easily.”

Joe Yerdon (https://twitter.com/JoeYerdonPHT/status/481106112121675776): “I know Umberger played well in Philly before but this just has all the makings of there being another move coming. This on its own is odd.”

Joe Yerdon (https://twitter.com/JoeYerdonPHT/status/481105697049161729): “Hartnell is the better player in this by a long shot. I’m lost on this one.”

Sean Gentille (https://twitter.com/seangentille/status/481105675079389185): “Umberger is way worse than Hartnell, but he’s signed for two less years. This is so tough!”

If Vanek wants to come to Minnesota, he may have to take a one- to three- year deal. The Wild have significant interest in Niskanen. Niskanen will want a long-term deal, likely north of $5 million. Ryan Kesler is going to screw himself by limiting his list:

McKenzie: Ryan Kesler’s list has six teams, with the Ducks and Blackhawks the most interested at this time. Nothing is imminent. The Ducks and Blackhawks may feel they are the only two teams in the running, therefore not offering as much as they would if more teams were involved. Canucks won’t deal him unless they get what they want.

But a lot of other moves on hold waiting to see if/where he goes. The Ducks want him, but may go for Spezza:

Eric Stephens of the OC Register (http://www.ocregister.com/ducks/spezza-627186-kesler-ryan.html): The Ducks want either Ryan Kesler or Jason Spezza. Trade talks have been ongoing.

TSN Insider Trading (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=455711): McKenzie: Jason Spezza talk has picked up in the last 24-48 hours, with four teams talking to the Sens. Three teams from the West including the Blues and Ducks.

Once Kesler finds a new home the dominoes will start falling.

constantly trading for a future that never comes isn't fun. we know next year has a lot of pain involved. why extend that pain or not take the risk now on getting a #2 pick for a future pick.

to me, if you get a guy who is 23-24 and developping well, it helps faster than waiting for ekblad or reinhart to get up to speed. but we have time. i think the fan base knows this is a 3 year project at minimum.

im thinking 2 more years of bad hockey, this year being really tough. the 16-17 season, after another high pick, i think the youth will really accelerate and we will see a much more skilled and cohesive hockey team. but 14-15 is going to be really tough, and 15-16 isnt going to be much better.

06-27-2014, 12:29 PM
i agree with your assessment, but in my dream scenario,

1. our #2 pick this year is hot out the gate. develops chemistry with some underwhelming pieces currently on the team, they setup a nice #2 line and #3 line.
2. the sabres still continue to struggle without a true #1 line, and cannot score goals. but since they signed no one of consequence this year in FA, they have plenty of cap space to use on FA in 15-16.
3. Neuvirth or another young goalie shows promise as the season wears on. HE gets better in the second half of the season, but isn't good enough to offset the lack of scoring. It allows the goalie to become the top goalie in 15-16.
4. based on the above, key young players get seasoned and develop good chemistry in key spots in line 2-4. The 1st rounders look to get better and become legit 1st liners. the defense gets used to their pairings and developed in 14-15. The goalie situation looks good and is ready to take off the following. This allows the mcdavid draft and the isle pick to rocket the sabres forward in 15-16.
5. they take a top notch FA for signature #1 center and provide some leadership and pizazz.

this makes the team relevant for 15-16. I really would like to avoid more than one more playoff-less season in the rebuild.

i know this relies on every single thing going right, but i think nolan's talents are with young hungry kids and some vets who felt passed over. he will get the most out of them.

Sabres make a small trade for a college star. Samuel Thomas. 6 foot 3. Like the size.

Desperate mgmt.

they are good third pairing d-men. they help, but it isnt going to move them that much.

you are right though, very desperate management. the missed badly on vanek and the team got a little better this offseason. i still think they finish bottom 10.

Really? Want to reconsider that? ROFL.

Not yet. They've coughed up some leads lately. I don't feel confident their defense and goaltending can hold up. Maybe not top 10, but I think they still come down to earth.
