10 Things You Should Know - Jay Riemersma

    1. Jay Riemersma grew up in Zeeland, Michigan. He played football for the Zeeland Chix.
    2. Riemersma was recruited to the University of Michigan as a quarterback. During his freshman year Jay was a perfect 3-3 for 43 yards and a touchdown. A QB Rating of 330.4.
    3. During his junior year Riemersma made a position change, due to a shoulder injury. He calls the injury divine intervention.
    4. In 1994 Jay won the Meyer Morton award. An award given to the player who showed the greatest development and promise, as the result of the annual spring practice. Prior winners include Gerald Ford, Jim Harbaugh, Desmond Howard and Todd Collins.
    5. Jay was the starting TE for the Wolverines in 1994-95, his stats were modest 73 receptions for 696 yards and 3 TDs’. It was enough to get drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 7th round of the 1996 draft.
    6. Riemersma was the 14th TE selected in the 1996 draft. Statistically he was the second best TE drafted (Rickey Dudley).
    7. In his first season Jay was re-united with former college QB Todd Collins.
    8. He’s currently ranked second all-time for Bills TE’s (Pete Metzelaars).
    9. His career was ended on 12/5/2004, after rupturing his Achilles on a 26-yard TD reception.
    10. After football Jay returned to Zeeland High School where he coached the Chix (for three seasons) to a 1-26 record.
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
    It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

    11. Due to a rare genetic abnormality, Jay does, in fact, have two left feet.

I remember a nice Bob Chandler-type catch he made against the Jets once.
