10 Things You Should Know: Nickell Robey

    1. Nickell Robey played WR, DB, and retuned kicks at Frostproof Middle-Senior High School.
    2. During his senior year he tallied 1,376 total yards and 17 TD’s, he also racked up 70 tackles and 2 interceptions on defense.
    3. As a kid he looked up to his older cousin Alvin Harper who won two Super Bowls with the Cowboys.
    4. Robey committed to Georgia, then Tennessee before finally following Lane Kiffin to USC. He started as a true freshman and finished that season with 48 tackles and 4 interceptions.
    5. It took just four games for Nickell to get his first interception and touchdown. A pick 6 against Washington State and Bills QB Jeff Tuel on 9/25/2010.
    6. In 2012 Nickell (a junior) was named a team captain. USC defeated Syracuse in Week 2, his second win against Coach Marrone (2011 & 2012).
    7. Robey declared for the NFL draft after his junior season despite being told by the NFL that he was not projected to go in the first 3 rounds. He was invited to the combine. Teammate Robert Woods also declared with a year of eligibility remaining.
    8. Nickell had the admiration of USC fans for his lock down coverage on Michael Floyd and solid performances against Andrew Luck. But his size and his 40 time made GM’s weary. Robey went undrafted in the 2013 Draft. One hour later he singed with the Buffalo Bills.
    9. Because of injuries Robey was already seeing 54% of the defensive snaps by Week 2. He finished the season with 39 tackles, 3 sacks, 1FF, 1 FR and an interception returned for a TD.
    10. 29 Cornerbacks were selected in the 2013 draft. Robey finished the season 7th statistically among rookie corners.
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
    It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.
