wow, 5yrs at 23MM. that's interesting. they are paying for future production. i don't think he's earned that when it's compared to moulsons 5yr 25MM deal.

but not the worst deal i don't think

“I need to be more consistent. I’m happy that I beat my last career-high at 20 so I’m glad I got 21,” Ennis said. “But I want to get 30. I want to get 40. You want to set high goals, so I’m going to set high goals for myself.”

“(My play) got better as the season went on ... I have to play the whole season like that though.” -
Tyler Ennis

Apparently confirmed:

A person familiar with the agreement confirmed to The Associated Press early Thursday that the Sabres have reached a deal to re-sign Ennis to a five-year contract worth about $23 million. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the Sabres haven't announced the deal.

For that kind of money he'd better turn in to a 30/30 guy.

Ennis is not Max, the ultimate floater who scored once every 3 months and refused to back check.

20-25 goals gets you that $$ these days. I get that they're all overpaid as much as anyone.

He was our best player the last half of the season. Hard to argue with this.

The similarity is that they both over-rely on speed and puck-handling. Max never understood that he can't skate around or through guys in the NHL like he could at the lower levels. He'd dance around with the puck until he lost it rather than shoot or dump it in.

I see Ennis doing that same thing a lot. At first I thought it was youth but he doesn't seem to be improving much in that area, and that's why I'm concerned that he'll be the next Max

More like the second coming of Christian Ruuttu. Like Ennis, Ruuttu was the best player on a lousy team.

I like Ennis, but he is what he is. A decent 2nd liner for most teams. Probably relegated to 3rd line for a top team. But a superstar in Buffalo. While size isn't the only thing, it is important. If he was the size of Vanek, he'd be that superstar. Darcy reached taking him at #26, but that's not Tyler's fault. He's got game. He's got potential. But I think his ceiling is probably 60 points or so.

As far as small guys go, he's no MSL. Then again, he's no Gerbe either. We can all be thankful for that. This is not to disparage Gerbe. Kid has heart. But heart only gets you so far. If Ennis's ceiling is 60 points, Gerbe's is more like 30.

$4.6 million though. *whistles*

I use to complain during the Golisano years they didn't spend enough so I feel like a hypocrite saying this but they should have been able to get Ennis for 4 million a year max.. They overpaid him

After healthcare, Obama should tackle the skyrocketing salaries in sports. It's ridiculous.

Spending foolishly doesn't get any better results than not spending at all...

But I'm not overly concerned about this because of all the cap space we have left.

Now, if the rebuild goes according to plan and we are ready to compete for the Cup but lose out on a top FA by $500 k a year becuase we couldn't squeeze him under the cap, then I'll be pissed.

And what the eff does it have to do with my tongue-in-cheek quip about ridiculous sports salaries? Jesus effing christ...mention Obama and it brings every jackalope out of their hole.

Vogl tweet..."I like his approach to the game. I like his compete level. I like his speed," Murray said. "There's a lot of things I like about him, and if we can do a long-term deal with him, then obviously the decision we've made is we'd go forward with him."

Thanks for bringing the thread back to topic! I like Ennis too, but for that salary he has to be more than an little energetic grinder-type. He's got to put more pucks into the net. Hopefully he can find some linemates that raise his game a bit.

If it wasn't for Ennis, we might have ended up last in the NHL and scored the least amount of goals during a 82 game season.
