The Bills filled a pair of roster vacancies Saturday morning, bringing in a pair of guys who tried out during minicamp earlier this offseason.

The team announced they signed wide receiver Tori Gurley and cornerback Kamaal McIlwain.

The two players are from neighboring small towns in South Carolina (Rock Hill and Indian Land) and have plenty of stickers on their purses.

Gurley has been cut by the (take a deep breath) Packers, Vikings, Raiders, Buccaneers, Chargers, Ravens and Browns. He’s played in three NFL games and has one catch, and has now turned up with a quarter of the entire league.

McIlwain has been cut by the Chiefs, Falcons, Panthers and Saints at varying points.

Well...

..."Practice squad players practice alongside regular roster players during the week, but they are not allowed to play in actual games. They can be paid considerably less than active squad players: The minimum salary from 2008 to 2010 was $5,200 per week (2008-2010)[1] for 17 weeks, or $88,400 per season,"...

Hey Swiper, I don't think you have to worry until either one, or both, actually make the team. Camp fodder to learn the basics, get cut, and bring back on board in case one of the positions goes through a slew of injuries.

After the Alonso injury, why are they inking WR and CB youngsters, but not LBs?

Sorry YardRat. I am a bit more of a closet Naaman Roosevelt fan than I thought. He was a decent receiver. As was David Nelson, who continues to impress the folks in NYC. Roosevelt can play in the NFL. At least to some degree. Signing these two stiffs looks like a waste of time. They should have resigned Roosevelt.

They signed Sylvester Stallone (http://espn.go.com/blog/buffalo-bills/post/_/id/11299/bills-sign-lb-stevenson-sylvester) just before that.

Gurley is a big possession WR with size who uses his body.

McIlwain ran a sub 4.4 40 at his Pro Day in Newberry.

How does a practice player - any player - bounce around 8 teams, 2011 to date? And 5 different teams in 2012.

WR's with size often get a lot of chances plus it shows that at least 1/4 of the NFL has seen some level of skill in him or else he wouldn't have been signed so many times.

At 88K annual practice squad pay. For a 17 week commitment. I'd follow that dream for a lifetime.

Why are they inking fringe wide receivers? I'd be rooting out anything but that position, what with Woods dripping with promise after his rookie season, the fistful of high picks they have accumulated including this years' #1.

With Alonso on the outs, Dareus who knows where, the chirping about Glenn, an aging Freddie, Spiller's ankle tweek, EJ's knee, Chandler being their best TE since who knows when, and so on...

Speaking of fringe wrs, this youngster (Cobi Hamilton) gets occasional ink here:

I don't know a thing about him, other than his name comes up now and then and he is very fast.

these guys are the guys who are going to be on the coverage team. and they'll need to step up as a WR if possible. if they don't, they are out. if they do, then they provide depth.

we'll see what they have when we are in the 4th quarter of some of the pre-season games.

You raise an interesting point. I've discounted the blame on BUFs' ST coach -cripes, it's football that has been played for a hundred years, and what's not known? - and stated that the ST players weren't up to snuff.

Maybe they are looking at ST bodies - although I'd be looking for LB types myself - if I wanted blazing streakers thanks to the recent rules, I'd tell my contracted speedsters to get out on the field and show me your stuff.

He was the 2nd leading receiver behind Alshon Jeffrey for a solid Gamecocks team...He left school too early but he was a well known player in the SEC.

Maybe McIlwain is better than he first looked!

Camp Day #5:

McIlwain consistently played physically against his assignment and only allowed easy yards in front of him. He also showed awareness, reacting to a tipped pass and leaping up for the interception. This isn’t the first day McIlwain has looked impressive, but it’s been his best day thus far. If he continues this stretch of play, he could be in the mix for the final cornerback spot.
