US Senators call on Goodell to give Rice harsher punishment

..."Now that everybody on Capitol Hill has weighed in on the Redskins name controversy, the men and women elected to represent the people have moved on to a new sports-related target: the NFL and Ravens running back Ray Rice.

U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) sent letters to commissioner Roger Goodell calling for Rice to face a harsher punishment beyond the two-game suspension handed down by the league and considered too lenient by many critics.

“The decision to suspend Mr. Rice for a mere two games sends the inescapable message that the NFL does not take domestic or intimate-partner violence with the seriousness they deserve,” the letter read.

“Mr. Rice's suspension reflects a disturbingly lenient, even cavalier attitude towards violence against women. We therefore urge you to take two steps immediately. First, reconsider and revise Mr. Rice's suspension to more adequately reflect the seriousness of his offense. We are also writing to the Baltimore Ravens to request that they impose additional discipline under their own authority, but it is imperative that the NFL itself makes clear that this conduct is truly unacceptable.”"...

Maybe the NFL considered the victim's feelings like a court does when the victim pleads the judge to have mercy on the abuser.

Unfortunately, the victim made the strongest statement on how she feels about the perpetrator-she married him.

Nobody on the PC side ever mentions this part of the judgment on Ray Rice. I imagine if the woman had left him, taken out a restraining order and sued him, Ray Rice would have been suspended a lot longer. So the PC crowd blames the NFL for looking at the big picture while all the Monday Morning QBs ignore the fact that by her actions, the victim (for whatever reason) does not quite view herself as the victim that everyone else does. She's an adult, she knows the situation better than anyone who has condemned the light penalty, and her actions say she believes the situation wasn't nearly as bad as those on the outside think it is.

Or she is just bats**t crazy for staying with her abuser.

I agree that the suspension seemed light, but this is not something the govt should be involved in (unless there was a consistent pattern and even then, the public should be making the appropriate noise to get the pattern changed.) Why does the Congress feel that it needs to get involved in so many sports issues, steroids, etc. Take care of what they should be paying attention to.

One of my Senators - Sherrod Brown - wants the Feds to regulate shopping carts because kids occasionally go kerplop . Surely a vital concern in times of domestic and global turmoil, eh?
