That the club hasn't settled one the most important positions at this late date boggles the mind...

this article from last year makes me wonder if the Bills want an actual PUNTER.

When the Cleveland Browns claimed P Colton Schmidt off waivers on Tuesday, we speculated that they might be looking for him to not only win the punter job, but to handle kickoffs during the regular season as well. He'll get a shot against Chicago.

His preseason numbers look great 48.9 yards per punt with 4 of the 7 inside the 20 and only 19 yards returned of course you have to wonder if they were inflated being on the 49ers versus here.

Well there's one NFL position that is literally the same everywhere, and that is punter. So that doesn't bother me too much.

Hey, he came from UC Davis.

            But so did Nathanial Hackett.

Not so. A good one pays countless dividends in the yards that you have to defend. One of the most important game stats to inspect is drive starts.

Ray Guy wasn't a #1 pick in a vacuum, top-echelon punters have long careers for a reason. IIRC, Moorman was dubbed the Bills' MVP a few times. He hit for yards, arc, and placement.

He did have one game in Denver to inflate his number but it was one punt of 55 yards but he had a good preseason last year too per http://www.steelersdepot.com/2014/08...olton-schmidt/
and he might be competing for the kickoff specialist position too as a little more than half (34 of 62) of his college kickoffs weren't returned but his numbers dropped a little in NFL preseason on 3 of 15 for touchbacks. He sounds like a solid prospect none the less.

I'm getting tired of this club's experiments with "kickoff specialists." The only sense of it that I can make out is if they they know their ST talent is so poor that they are wiling to blow a roster spot for a chap who can kick it out of the end zone. And it's not like they are an offensive juggernaut that gets to use that on a regular basis.

Idk why. We are only going to kick off once a game.

With the new rules in play if you're kickoff guy can't routinely allow your team to keep a long field you're at a competitive disadvantage. I just can't believe we can't find a kicker that can handle points and kickoffs when most of the league can. Granted injuries to Hopkins and Potter haven't helped any.

That's the Bills. They must be close to having the worst director of player personnel and associated staff in the league.

Just about every NFL team has one and their impact, importance and job description varies around the league.

Stop being so negative. I'm confident our D will score a TD in at least a couple games!

I think you guys are looking at a kickoff specialist as a long kicker when really they are looking for the guy who can do the best onsides kicks. The new analytics requires a lot of onsides kicks.
