In the Bills (http://www.nfl.com/teams/buffalobills/profile?team=BUF)' opening win (http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2014090702/2014/REG1/bills@bears) over the Chicago Bears (http://www.nfl.com/teams/chicagobears/profile?team=CHI), Spiller carried the ball twice as many times (15) as Jackson (7) and Dixon (5). Yet, he gained just 53 yards, compared to 61 yards for Jackson and 60 yards for Dixon.

Still, Spiller possess the most talent of anyone in the Bills (http://www.nfl.com/teams/buffalobills/profile?team=BUF)' backfield and Whaley can't just watch skill walk out the door.

He can't? He let it walk right out the door for Byrd, a better player than Spiller and his overhyped lack of all these huge plays we were promised.

once a season starts, i'm firmly against negotiating a contract. injury risk is too high. the player is vested in playing. let them earn it. if an agreement couldnt be reached prior to season, take the risk that they have a great season and you pay for it.

you don't pay a guaranteed contract now to remove the incentive of a good season and take the risk of injury.

this isn't to say i don't want spiller, but i think if he has an OJ like season, let's pay him for that. let's not predict that he might get a lot better when the position sees turnover and its a position the bills have historically done well at drafting even during the last 14 years.

No reason this shouldn't get done in my opinion. Give him 4 million a season. That's more than the running backs in the free agent market received last year. Make him feel good by giving him a little bit extra because at 4 million, that's peanuts for a guy who can change a game in one play.

I don't have any concerns about Spiller's motivation. He's always been a team guy that's driven and hungry to win. I hope he gets a new deal soon.
