View Full Version : Watch for a breakout day from someone on the bottom of the roster

Someone pointed this out to me a few years ago, and it's held true quite often. When a team has to make a midseason switch to a backup QB, either for injury or performance, its often followed by a breakout performance by some bottom of the roster wideout or tight end. And the reason was pretty simple: Those guys had been practicing together on the 2nd team all that time, so the QB looks to the guy he knows.

Some examples:
Week 4: Teddy Bridgewater takes over for Matt Cassel in Minnesota. 2nd teamer Jarius Wright suddenly busts out for 8 catches/132 yards. More than Jennings/Patterson combined.
Week 4: Blake Bortles takes over for Chad Henne after week 3. Clay Harbor, who had been practicing with the second team while recovering from injury, goes 8/70.

I'm guessing either this week or next week we will see some ridiculous 6/90 type statline from either Easley or Hogan.

Yeah, Chris Hogan, if on the field, will probably have a big day here soon.

Orton wasn't here through the pre season. He hasn't had time to establish anything with the bottom feeders

The second stringers still practice during the season. He's been here a month.

Maybe Lee Smith or Chris Gragg go off. It be nice if Gragg did as he has the measurable to make plays.
