That's messed up.

Forget football for a second- that can cause permanent damage to someone's vision. If this turns out to be true, the NFL better do something quickly.

There are no laws specific to illegal use or possession of any type of laser pointer in the state of Michigan, other than one for 'harassment' in the city of Dearborn, that I can find.

Boot them for life from attending any NFL games or events, maybe, but no legal recourse.

It's for real, what a complete joke of a team for the fans to do this to players. The fans trying to change the outcome of the game means the NFL needs to put special cameras in for fans now as well.

Its classified as assault.

Above is just one similar case.

I wondered why Orton was pointing at his eyes. I thought the Lions were bad enough with the dirty hits - but the Fans hitting players with laser pointers? Ridiculous.

That's in Massachusetts...they have laws on the books pertaining to lasers...other states do also...Michigan does not. Are you going to charge someone in Michigan for assault based on a Massachusetts law?

I don't claim to know every point of the law. But does it matter which state its in if it can be classified as assault?

If they catch these nim-rods (and I can see the NFL wanting to nip this in the bud), I can see the NFL getting their way and making an example out of whoever was doing this.

If the nfl handles it like the refs handle the game yesterday, they'll talk abou it for a while and determine there was no issue.

And frankly itd it'd be amazing if the NFL has issue with the lazer guy but not ray rice.

I remember one time back in the 70's...OJ was running with the ball, and someone blew a whistle in the stands.

OJ got creamed on that play, because he was the only one who stopped.

After that incident was when they banned "artificial noisemakers" in the stadium.

See, this is the problem with the press. Now other idiots are going to try this because they think they can get away with it.

What should have happened, and maybe did, was they find this guy, beat the **** out of him and do not allow him back. Make an example of him. Never to be heard of again.

This has been going on for a long time in sports, I know a situation a while ago in baseball where fans would put mirrors in their pocket and try and shine the light into the batters field of vision during the away teams at bat. As long as there is something they can use to distract an opposing players fan have and will continue to try and use it.

Potentially harming a players vision though is a new one.

At the very least, the NFL can ban this guy from ALL NFL Stadiums for the rest of his life.

Yeah, it does matter...laws are jurisdictional.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not stumping for whoever the culprit is to walk away with no consequences, but because of the absence of laser laws on Michigan's books nothing can be done through the courts...as I and better days have stated, however, the League can throw their 'book' at him/her/them...and they should.

In a related story, the New England Patriots are sponsoring collectable laser pointer day for all of their remaining home games and they are installing 10 large lazer beams to be aimed at the eyes of all their opponents at Gilette Stadium in ****sboro.

Fwiw here is this from reddit. (http://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/2ikitb/nfl_trying_to_id_laser_culprit_at_lions_game/)

My little brother is good friends with this kid. The twitter account everybody has seen is his real name. He has been ID'd and NFL officials visited him last night along with the police. He received a misdemeanor, fine, and lifetime ban from NFL games.

NFL had to jump on this quick. We could all organize something here on billszone to have everyone go to the pats game and sneak a laser pointers in. Then there are way too many to stop and they would probably shut the game down.
