Linebacker Shawn Barber is new to the Chiefs' program, but it didn't take him long to pick up on this season's theme.
"This is the year for us to lay it on the line," said Barber, signed in March as a free agent. "This is not the year for us to worry about the future of the team. This is not the year for us to be trying to develop players. We need to make our Super Bowl run this year.
"All the pieces are in place. Dick Vermeil has gone from introducing his program the first year to watching it grow the second year to the point where the car runs by itself now. This is the year where he can sit back and enjoy the fruits of his labor."
Barber is hardly alone in his beliefs. There is much optimism at Arrowhead Stadium, particularly for a team with no playoff appearance since 1997 and no winning record since 1999.
