i figured making a single thread for game day threads would be better since this forum is slower in the sabres department.

anyways, they sabres are getting taken to school. but they seem to be generating SOME offensive pressure on svedberg, who looks like a decent young goalie.

SpikedLemonade
10-18-2014, 07:48 PM
.....svedberg, who looks like a decent young goalie.

If the Sabres like him, they should make an offer.

The Bruins develop their goalies for a long time in the AHL where Svedberg has been. I believe he was the AHL goalie of the year in 2012-2013.

The Bruins have signed journey goalies to play back up last year and the year before. They leave the Bruins to start or challenge to start in the NHL after a year.

The Bruins have Subban in the AHL developing as well.

I am sure the Sabres could get Svedberg for their 2nd round pick next year. Perhaps even a conditional 2nd round pick.

The comparable would be Bishop being traded to TB last year.

Also, our scoring is pathetic so I wouldn't be enamored by a guy for playing well against this team.

Why do I think the Polacks in Buffalo were saying this in the early 70's in Buffalo when industry just kept moving away?

I saw the first and some of the 3rd before I fell asleep. Some great opportunities early but they couldn't capitalize. The first PP was one of the most pathetic I've ever seen.

Moulson looks a lot like Vanek in the 26: always right three but rarely able to bury it.

The first goal was on Hogson- still a defensive liability. Ennis has been the best player so far to date. It's probably age but Gionta is surprisingly average. He has not impressed me at all.

I watched the LA game until they got their second goal. Up until then, there was a chance a puck might bounce off Stafford's face and into the net or something like that. It wasn't going to happen twice though.

They look like peewees out there. Bad peewees. They couldn't string together two passess if the franchise depended on it. One goal over four games and with 10% of the season played they are on pace to score under 100. On the bright side, they are only averaging 3.5 GA. Could be much worse.

no, reinhart isnt ready yet. but thats the thing, hes a tweener right now. (IM NOT COMPARING REINHART TO STAMKOS, ONLY THEIR SITUATIONS) does anyone remember stamkos rookie season? first half he was really struggling to keep his head above water. second half, he made the adjustments and they paid off. i think if they keep reinhart up, his play will continue to get better and he will be ready around the 50 game mark.

again, i think he should be returned, but if they keep him up, i dont see it as a big deal. hes already showing signs of improvement.

I didn't see the Montreal game, but 2-1 in a shootout sounds like the d and goaltending held up. The lack of offense remains a huge problem. Stafford's overdue for his contract year hat trick.

Why do you say that? Because the Sabres were able to find deals that no GM in their right mind would pass up for guys that were leaving in free agency anyway?

And it doesn't take a genius to understand, despite the gallows humor around here, that teams can't "tank intentionally" and be guaranteed anything. The Sabres were in last place by 20 points last year and still didn't get the top pick.

thats the rub. its not like those guys were staying, so any good GM moves those guys for youth. murray actually did REALLY well last deadline.

the defense and goaltending is getting better, especially neuvirth. there are some positive signs here and there, but really, everyone is more focused on mcdavid and eichel. many forget the kids on the farm having strong seasons. or the fact that even though hes back in kootnay, reinhart has the making of a cornerstone forward himself. not quite at the level of the upcoming draft, but a seriously strong star player.

watching the sabres go through the motions of a bad season gets old. watching a team actually go out and skate and compete and stick up for team mates is kind of a big deal.

it most certainly means something. and its a major reason nolan had success in his early coaching career. "hardest working team in hockey"

having hasek didnt hurt, but a team that competes and tries and works is alot more fun to watch then a team simply going through the motions. its a sign that the players still care, even if it is for one night. but its nolans job to make sure it isnt simply one night.

Here's a hint... if you have to talk to a player about their compete level, perhaps they shouldn't be getting icetime or even be in the team... Hodgson.. cough.

its funny you mention hodgson. i always believed he was going to become a second line center, but ive come to realize most games, he doesnt show up.

he would be fine on an established team where a guy giving 75% isnt going to hurt them, like the hawks or blues. but on a team like the sabres, its exposes that glaring hole ten times over.

but regardless, you are right, but thats what makes last game at least notable in that department. the sabres as a whole were just going through the motions. last night, some at least showed some life.

Harrington tweet...Zadorov has now six games left to play before the Sabres have to make a decision, He can't be sent back to the London Knights because he doesn’t have a release from the Russian club that owns his rights. But if Sabres don’t keep him, they lose control of him to St. Petersburg, a KHL team.

Second, it seems strange that someone who won't shut up about how bad this team is can't understand why someone who likes the team might be happy when the team actually shows flashes of competence.

Look for Sabres to go after Emelin tonight! He was ONLY fined $11,021.51 for illegal hit to the head on Sabres captain Gionta in last night's win over the Canadiens. If this game gets out of hand tonight the NHL only has themselves to blame they could have suspended Emelin but they chose to give him the fine. NHL never learns DO THEY!

This team isn't a last place team anymore.

they are big and fast on the back end in the top 4. Enroth is playing the game basically in his net and playing it well.

and they've all bought into what they're doing.

his job is a no-win situation that he's turning into the ultimate FU to Pegs and Murray. This team just beat the Canadiens in a back to back WEEKEND series and just beat the high scoring Lightning in s shoot out.

Its not a fluke and the tank is now a lost dream.

Nolan IS a great coach and if this continues... and the Sabres flirt with the post season, he will be a candidate for coach of the year.

The Sabres are going to have to decide soon if they will let Zadorov play for Russia at the WJC.. If they do the optics will look bad.. The players in the dressing room won't like it.. It would be one thing if Zad was a struggling youngster making many mistakes but Zad has been one of there 3 best defensemen lately

I was at last nights win. This teams upside is unlimited.

They still make a lot of young mistakes (completely understandable) but they are been coached up between shifts and are responding so well. They hustle every shift.

The kids on this roster are so freakin' talented and a boatload more are in Rochester and the juniors/college.

Nolan benched Hodgson and he comes back last night and scores 5 seconds into his first shift. Foligno was just benched and he scores next. The best players are all under drinking age and we are loaded with them.

They will still have their challenging games but the positive growth is undeniable. Nolan and his staff are coaching these guys up perfectly.

God, they are fun to watch. Who could have seen this a month ago ?

Look, the NHL was never going to let us get McDavid anyway. They are going to rig it to save Edmonton, Columbus or Florida.

During the first month and a half of the season, the Sabres looked like one of the worst teams in history. During the last month, they looked like the rebuild was way ahead of schedule. The sample size is too small to know which one is correct. But if the Sabres play themselves out of the McDavid/Eichel sweepstakes, it means the base talent is there and they have enough to build on. Did you see the stands last night at First Niagara?

Despite the Sabres playing well it did not look much different than the Florida rink.

Too bad the Leafs don't visit more often so the Sabre season ticket holders could make some money selling off their tickets to the Sabres opponents and the place could be full.
