The guy is at best a mediocre back, clearly replaceable, and we will all see that with Bryce Brown this week. Let him start negotiating with other teams. As far as I am concerned, the dude is washed up.

In fact, I would be quite pissed if we ended up re-signing him.

Did you see that run he was hurt on?

I would think that by being hurt, insurance pays him but by releasing him as a vested veteran, we would have to pay him out. If you are able to release guys that are injured like that. I'm pretty sure that can only happen in the off season.

Can't release an injured player without an injury settlement per the CBA.

Plus, given the mediocre performance last year and only being slightly better before the injury this year, we might be able to keep him for cheap.

Don't get me wrong- I'm not thrilled with the guy either and I wouldn't mind moving on. But this team has a history of cutting guys and failing to replace them with anyone equal or better. So, until the off-season when we can see what we can do in terms of upgrading the position, I'd just as soon keep him around.

Or at least see how Brown does.

i think we've made a choice to have a bigger line. and CJ doesn't fit well into that decision. He's not a back with great vision. He needs a clear space to get through and he'll fly through that. The stage at which our OL is at and the fact they aren't going to create outside lanes, we need a back with visions (aka a fred guy), or a smasher who just runs into whatever little opening he gets and carries a guy for about 3 extra yards.

I don't think CJ is washed up, i think we made him obsolete. it's just sad that they didn't realize this earlier in the season to load up the roster with the RB's they'd prefer and send CJ for a pick or something.

I could be wrong, but i think if CJ gets to a team that has faster linemen that pull effectively, he'll become a great second option picking up the long runs after a stronger back has worn down a defense. i don't think he'll do that with what our OL goal seems to be.

The Bills are waiting to see how many games CJ will miss this season.

They will then put him on IR which will end his season & likely his career in Buffalo.

1. They can't release an injured player
2. Why cut him? They have to pay his salary anyway.
3. If they keep him and he leaves as a UFA to another team then he is counted in the formula to calculate compensatory picks. If they cut him, he does not.
4. This could be an 8 week injury. He could be back late in the season or the playoffs (yes, I know - in theory)

There is not one reason to cut him and several bad ones.

I agree with what you said elsewhere in your post, but this better not be an issue. Pegula should spend big $ on free agents, especially some offensive linemen.

5. It would send a demoralizing message to the rest of the team to release him.
6. he is a good player that many Bills fans underestimate, IMO
7. There is no good reason to release him whatsoever, like you say...even if they could

Personally, I would like to re-sign him. I may be in the minority, but I don't agree to the reasons why most people seem to be so down on him.

He's a unique type of weapon, and has clearly been used wrongly over the past two years. I think you bring him in on punt returns, kick returns, as a receiver out of the backfield, and as a third down back.

He won't get big money. RB's aren't as in demand and he doesn't have a good track record to ask for the big check. He's better off staying in Buffalo.

but why keep him if we don't have a system that let's him flourish. especially if dixon and brown do well, then its pretty obvious that we aren't putting himi in a position to succeed based on his skill set. he's best to go elsewhere. i think he could be a good back for the right team. we've made a decision to go one way and we can't reverse t hat for 1 player. Especially if 3 others do ok.

I don't think he was 'slightly better' this year, quite the opposite actually.

He just needs one guard that can pull. One guard opens up so many more run options.

Right now he can go off tackle. That's it. With a good pulling guard, he can go off tackle (with or without the pulling guard), he can hit either guard's gap or hi can follow the guard to the right (inside or outside the tackle). Plus with all those options the defense starts flowing in one direction which opens up the cutback game for him. He doesn't need the entire line to be small and agile, he just needs one guard capable of pulling.

A few WRs capable of setting up the screen wouldn't hurt either.

And needing a pulling guard is why letting Levitre walk without a real fight was such a dumbass move.

Just more proof that Spiller isn't a waste if the OC knows how to use him correctly. Hackett has failed at that however.

Getting the ball outside of the tackles has so much more involved than simply one guy that can pull. Who pulled on Spiller's big run this past Sunday? Instead of a 50+ yard gain, how many yards would the run have lost if the guard had vacated his spot to pull?
