Recently, I sat down with former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Don Beebe to reflect on his great career in Buffalo and to catch up with him on what’s he doing these days.
Don joined the Buffalo Bills as their first selection in the 1989 draft,(82nd overall) in the third round from tiny Chadron State. Buffalo gave up their 1st and 2nd round picks for Cornelius Bennett a year earlier.
Beebe played 6 of his 9 NFL seasons in Buffalo, and finished his career with 3,236 yards and 23 touchdowns. After a year with the expansion Carolina Panthers, he finally won that elusive Super Bowl ring with the Green Bay Packers in 1996.
What was your impression being drafted in the 3rd round in 1989 with Buffalo's first pick in that draft?
It was huge, I had gone to a small high school, then a small college, and I remember sitting in on draft day in a 1 bedroom house with 21 people, it was unbelievable.
How big of a change was it to go from a small college to the NFL?
It was a big difference, they flew us in to meet the team, and I remember getting off the plane and seeing a lot of photographers. I turned to my wife and said "Those aren't for us are they?"
Do you remember your first catch? Describe it.
I was the 4th receiver the first 2 games, but Jim pushed to get me in there. After they released Chris Burkett, I had my chance. It was a Saturday afternoon game against Houston, and Chris Dishman was running a press. He came up to me and said "I hear the white boy can run". That play was a run, and on the next, Jim said that if Dishman was pressing, he was going to get me the ball. I looked back at the pass, and it looked like a punt it was so high. I caught a 63-yard bomb. Dishman came up to me on the next play and said "I guess the white boy can run" CLICK HERE FOR MORE...
