Top Free Agent Fail: Jairus Byrd

Saints' Jairus Byrd leads list of top 10 free-agent flops

    1. Jairus Byrd, New Orleans Saints safety: Of all players who changed teams this offseason, Byrd earned the most guaranteed money. A major red flag emerged shortly thereafter when Byrd underwent back surgery in May. He was limited in training camp and exposed as a liability during the Saints' disappointing September. After missing tackles and surrendering big plays, the three-time Pro Bowl selection managed just four games before a torn lateral meniscus ligament ended his season.

Jairus Byrd played just four games for the Saints after signing one of the offseason's biggest contracts. The Raiders and Jets are also heavily represented on our list of the top free-agent disappointments.

signing orton looks like the fa move of the year but not resigning byrd might be a close second

Money well saved. Bills were already paying enough out in dead money.

Didn't need more of it on the roster. All-Whirlpool

What say you all about Andy Levitre leaving for big money now?

Visit some Titan's boards and see what they think about breaking bank for Levitre.

I said he'd never see that whole payday, he'll probably be lucky to make it through next year before taking a pay cut or getting waived. Levitre is seen as a big waste in Tennessee as well...

I think it was Bill Polian that said a FA hurts the team he leaves more than he helps the team he goes to.

Letting guys like Levitre and Byrd walk for way more money than they're worth does not bother me at all. What bothers me is the lack of a plan for finding a replacement. Our guards are a mess still and the safety situation isn't much better. I like Searcy and Williams and I think Graham was an attempt at a solution, but it hasn't been smooth.

In general, throwing down top money for ANY free agent is generally not a sound practice, IMHO, unless its a QB or legitimate game-changing player. Byrd is a damn good safety, but few big money FA's are worth what they're given.

losing Byrd really helped solidify the run D.

Byrd also got more guaranteed money than Mario Williams, which is crazy to me.

I actually think our passing D has been better this year than when Byrd was here. We lead the league in INT and a lot of our sacks were caused by coverage.
