SANTA CLARA -- Masafumi Kawaguchi, the Japanese linebacker who joined the 49ers for the American Bowl in Osaka, Japan, last year, will re-join the team when players report to training camp next week.
The 5-foot-11, 235-pound Kawaguchi starred at San Clemente High School in Southern California and was a standout at Ritsumeikan University in Japan. The 29-year-old recently wrapped up his seventh NFL Europe season, recording 29 tackles, three passes defensed and one forced fumble for the Amsterdam Admirals.
Last year, Kawaguchi was supposed to practice with the 49ers for two weeks, play with the team in Japan, and then remain there when the team returned to California. But then-49ers coach Steve Mariucci was so impressed with Kawaguchi's enthusiasm that he had Kawaguchi come back with the team.
