My favorite play this year was that idiot Jet running back getting hauled down behind the line of scrimmage BY HIS HAIR.

Why Are So Many NFL Players Growing Really Long Hair?

...And some guys simply like the look.

“We were playing the University of Miami and I just saw the way they looked. … They were shaking their hair and I was like, ‘That looks good.’ And then when they put their helmets on, it looked great coming out of the back of their helmets,” said Dallas Cowboys receiver Jesse Holley, whose dreadlocks now reach down to the middle of his back.

“It makes me feel like I’m running fast,” Holley added. “When I have my hair out, I feel like a lion. It puts you in that wild, warrior-type mentality.”...

I remember when a Bill trying to tackle Ricky Williams pulled out one of his dreads. It might have been during the snow game where the Bills came back and won. Maybe the Historian will let me know. Anyway, I seem to remember maybe getting a personal foul penalty on the play?

I believe it is old white man hate. I certainly don't like it either, nor do I like the wearing pants around the upper thighs. Just stupid trends that will someday go away to be replaced by another stupid trend.

I wondered though, do the Bills lead the league in guys with long hair?

I do like the fact that long hair is now considered "part of the uniform" and they can be tackled by it.

honestly it doesnt bother me at all, i kinda like it. but i agree with the sentiment that its totally fair game to be hauled down by the hair. if it was me i wouldnt wear it outside the helmet/jersey for just that reason, id tuck it in super tight like they do the uniform to prevent it from being tugged on. but as a purely visual display i think its cool

I don't have a problem with the appearance, but there is a reason why every military force in the history of ever has required short hair: it's one less thing for your opponent to grab when fighting.

If that dude didn't have long hair, Bradham doesn't make that tackle. It gives the opponent one more method to make the tackle. This time it worked in our favor. Next time, the guy getting dragged down by the dreads could be Watkins or Gilmore on the INT (not holding my breath but he could possibly maybe make a play on the ball eventually).

I don't like giving the opponents an advantage. But this is one of the few times where the NFL got the rule right: you can wear your hair long if you want but you can't cry if an opponent rips it out of your head.

Most of that is fake extensions or braided hair rather than dreads.

Dreads are different. More scruffy looking.

If you watched the CFL Montreal at Hamilton game on Sunday there was a white LB on Montreal who had real dreads. I guess they don't test for pot smoking in the CFL.

thats one of the reasons they do that. dreds or braids allow you to have long good looking hair even when its nappy as an sos pad. you form the dreds or braids and then youre done for a month. otherwise your choice is to have it really short or shaved off, to have a big 70's fro, or spend lots of money and time and scalp burning to get it straightened

Actually the reason was more likely uniform appearance and prevention of head lice in cramped quarters, but grabbing hair was probably a part of it.

That's right. Caucasian hair generally falls as it grows, negroid hair generally grows out and is stiffer. It's an adaptation to environments - the falling locks of the caucasian retains body heat, the negroid locks dissipate heat.

I call those guys "Pretador" all the time. If you've seen the Schwarzenegger movie, you'll know what I'm talking about. "You're one ugly mother****er." Of course, some people may call me a racist here because I just referred to them as "those guys," so you can't really win. But they ARE "those guys," who else would they be? Just identifying a particular demographic...you can also refer to great people as "those guys" or "those people."

Disliking a hairstyle does not a racist make. Funny how there should be a question about that, but there is to lots of people. Like it's an issue that needs to be tiptoed around.

True story. I was talking to a black woman at the bar in a casino this past Christmastime...I'm certain she was a prostitute (and not because she was black), but hey, I try not to discriminate. Anyway, I'm talking to her, and somehow the subject of hair came up...perhaps I complimented her on her hair or something. Don't remember...and no, I wasn't gonna be her john or anything like that. I wasn't. So I say "the thing about black people's hair is..." and she says "shhhh," trying to stop me. There were other black people around. Like the subject is off-limits somehow. Somebody might be offended. But it's just hair for crying out loud. I don't think you have to be a scientist or barber to be allowed to talk about it.

Anyway, I went ahead anyway and explained about how black people (especially guys) have limited options in hairstyle choices. They got the natural 'fro going on. They can either go with the 'fro, shave it down, braid it, or go full-out dread. I didn't feel like I was lyin'. Of course, black women can straighten out their hair...I kinda like that. Men pretty much can't do that without looking foolish, in my opinion anyway (unless they go ponytail and can pull that off). That's it. Nobody got offended, and I wasn't lynched.

I don't really care about anybody's hair. I just laughed when that guy got tackled by his hair, so in that sense I'm glad he was a Predator.

When I was a kid, one of the things that was most cool about football was the uniforms, and how they transformed ordinary human beings into something that looked superheroic and not quite human. With the pads that made your shoulders look five feet wide and the helmets with the cages and the shoes with the spikes, it was more than just a collection of players on the field, it was a group of future-warriors.

Having long hair hanging out of your helmet destroys that illusion and just makes the game more egotistical, like "I may be making millions of dollars but growing these dreads and having them hang down to my ass is just a shout out to my Nubian warrior/Viking berserker/South seas cannibal heritage!"

I hate it.
