but to play devils advocate, just as easily we could have lost the Minnesota game, the Lions game and the bears game. But yea, it's nice not to be playing for draft picks in early december for once!

It's a football team with a QB problem. I have to applaud the staff at OBD and the coaches for assembling these guys and getting them to play. Orton is what he is and it's not good enough. Can be exciting at times...wouldn't surprise me at all to see him light up Denver and/or GB and win. It's just not good enough if you can't be the same guy every week. You don't even have to be great but you do have to be well prepared and the same guy or you throw off the rhythm of everything. That being said they need to put a lot in Orton's hands in the coming weeks and hope for the best.

We don't know what will happen with Manual. It's impossible to even say if they have or haven't found the right guy...if Pegula hires the consultant he's going to tell him to keep his hands off and let these guys do their jobs. The team is impressive. They built this team despite the QB problem a task no other staff in over a decade was able to field. Were Wilson still alive I would suggest we would end up seeing the 'hang on see if they got the guy in EJ' routine next year...which pretty much would be the attitude from the top that plummeted any success into the tank.

I love that we have this game coming up...this series of games really. The Bills are going to hit the field this week with their fates in their hands...and they are going to be playing a team if they beat it will make a difference. The same can be said about this whole stretch in December. Every single year when you are not getting to the post-season you can look back on games and play the 'if only if' game. We need to look ahead. If this team is man or mouse will only be told in the coming weeks. They have worked and played their way into this position though and that is an accomplishment. Now let's make some noise and get the job done for a change--remember that stiff arm Jackson threw opening week? That is what it's all about down the stretch.

Hear me out:

If we had won those games, and were 9-3 right now, we could finish 1-3 against the best teams in the league, make the playoffs, get booted DEFINITIVELY in the wild card round, and then bring back everyone from the front office to hackett. It would look like this team is better than it actually is.

As it stands, IF this team SOMEHOW goes 3-1, or even 2-2 over the last 4 games, and gets into the playoffs? Everyone deserves to come back--that would be a great finish against great teams. Additionally, that kind of finish would show that there really is the talent on this team to win a super bowl, either this year or next. we would be tied for first and fighting for the division instead of a wildcard. I'm not one to dwell on the past for too long but despite what any naysayers have to spew about, we are playing meaningful games in December for once in a long while...despite a tough schedule this month, we have a shot at breaking into a wildcard spot. Two factors...our offense has to pick it up more and we need a little help with losses for KC and San Diego. This isn't too far fetched! Remember the year the Giants came alive late in the season and won the super bowl from a wildcard spot? One game at a time man, one game at a time!

Here's the thing, it's been an interesting season for sure. But at the end of the day there are several critical things to note about the season.

First, we have been unable to beat above average teams on our schedule. (NE, SD) We've only been able to beat below average teams (Jets twice, Chicago, Minnesota) and marginal teams with major issues (Detroit, Miami (divisional), and Cleveland) with two of those marginal team games having been at home.

Second, we've only won, except against one crappy team (Minnesota) when we've had a positive TO margin. The problem with that is that we don't know if those TOs were forced, and many were, or whether in the case of Cleveland, Hoyer who came off a 0 TD 3 INT game last week simply didn't hit a wall for example. It's clear now that Smith and Vick for the Jets simply suck. Bridgewater? Stafford with only one legitimate target that tore us a new one? Miami at the beginning of the season when they were still recovering from major OL issues?

Our defense was marginally better but still hasn't proven that it can play well against a well against an above average offense, which the best Ds can do. They will have the chance to prove that in three of our next four games. We'll see what happens an reconvene after those games. But if we cannot hold any of those teams to below their season scoring averages, it's debatable how good this D really is.

IMO if we want our D to be regarded as a top defense for real, instead of just beating the hell out of imploding teams or teams with significant offensive issues, we will need to prove that we're better than that against any of the five games against above average offenses we face. We've faced two of them and have failed at that. There are three such games left. We'll see what happens.

A strong w/l record in a year that they couldn't take, is a good step forward. there are warts to this team, but if marrone lets hackett go, brings in a real OC, like he has a real DC, they can keep building. especially with orton given a chance to be a game manager.

the bills offense is so lackluster, that they aren't even giving their Qb's a chance to be game managers.

i think the FO will have to grade the coaching staff on their level of ineptness in game over 16 games. they might get to 10 wins, but they certainly didn't get there because of in game coaching. they would have gotten their in spite of it. it could be zany that we have a lot of turnover even with a good record.
