Tanking On Purpose & Double Standards

Why is ok for NHL teams to tank internationally for a CHANCE to draft a great prospect but not for NFL teams to do the same???

Here is a ESPN show discussion how 5 nhl teams are putting themselves in a position to draft one of the top 2 prospects next year:

Why is it the norm in one sport (nhl) and inconceivable heresy in another(NFL)?

Because each individual game in the NFL matters a lot more to the other teams.

That and there's a sh&& ton more money involved in the nfl. If anyone gets the idea that people aren't putting their best effort, that cash cows reputation and credibility is threatened.

The Bucs said they were not tanking while they played all their backups.

The Bucs have the FIRST pick in the draft.

Not sure I agree with the premise. Tanking is done but that doesn't make it acceptable.

If there is a difference, it's the "any given Sunday" reality of the NFL. There is always a team with low expectations that succeeds and a team with high expectations that fails. In the nhl, it's an 82 game season and it's clear very early if a team has no chance.

Also, this is a rare year in the NHL, with two can't miss prospects. The NFL draft is never that clear-cut.

            > Of course it's been done. The most famous case was when the Cubs purposely lost a World Series which is crazy!

In every other area of life, quite often, the ends justify the means; however, as a result of those Cubs there is a stigma of doing it in sports. In certain cases, it's done and it should be acceptable! For example: Colts with Luck, Penguins with Crosby, etc...

            > let's not kid ourselves, the Colts team that started Curtis Painter had no chance of winning a super bowl that year or anytime in the force able future and drafting Luck changed all of that. Very few prospects are worth it, but if your clearly bad, you have nothing to lose!

            > Agreed, however the NHL & NBA have draft lotteries so tanking is not sure to get you the top pick, however in the NFL it is!

                  Black Sox it is:

Nevertheless, the point remains the same regardless of who the guilty party is. Pro athletes and teams have purposely lost games regardless of importance!
