Game comes on at 12:30 pm Eastern.

Bryce Petty vs. Connor Cook.

Cook has decided to play his senior season at Michigan State, but he can always change his mind.

This year’s Cotton Bowl between Baylor and Michigan State is a classic matchup featuring a high-powered offense versus a stout defense matchup.

The fifth-ranked Bears boast the top offense in the country in both points and yards per game.

Led by quarterback Bryce Petty, Baylor averaged a whopping 48.8 points and 581.3 yards per game en route to an 11-1 record and a share of the Big 12 crown.

I like the coin toss idea...

Petty looks off the primary and goes deep for a nice TD strike. Not clear whether the look off was designed it may be. The 3rd down conversion/almost fumble was a nice throw.

I like his grit.

Petty with a brilliant 49 yard drop in the bucket.

That was a beautiful pass by Petty.

Some on here have criticized Petty for being a one read QB...that TD pass was no his first read nor were more than two of his prior completions...get real!

X-Era

It's very early and you can clearly see the non-NFL style offense. But he still is taking command and making plays... so far.

I want to see more progression plays... what he does when it isn't a quick hit to the primary guy.

I say designed. The receiver just looked like he knew the ball as coming. Still, Petty has to see that one-on-one match-up and force the look off. Nothing wrong with his accuracy.

There was a little rush but no one in his face on that play.

He's dealt with the pressure nicely so far. Even the lofted pass on the scramble looked like it might be throwing at pass interference

There's the flip side... Had to make progressions on 3rd and didn't get it done. If the guy hadn't slipped it looked like he would have been open. Just remember. He's not a 1st rounder.

Petty made some nice throws on that last drive, his receivers didn't help him at all.

That was a cool play, not by design!

He's a chain mover in a non-nfl offense with grit and a nice deep ball. Why not let him do what he does for a year while he develops progressions and decision making in a pro style offense?

X-Era
01-01-2015, 12:12 PM
He's got real nice zip and gets the ball out fast in the short game.

Another nice pass by Petty.

Cook is a great prospect but he does look a bit off. Several low throws.

The TD pass was a one-read play, deep. Nice throw, but the look-off was by design.

Yes it was..and it was set up by earlier plays.

That's a big trait of an Art Briles offense, forcing a S to go man on a WR.

But earlier,...lots of underneath passes, forcing the S to creep up.

He started to line up within around 8 yards of the LOS. then they take their shot.

If you've never seen Baylor play before...they seem a little slower getting the ball snapped than normal. (at least it seems so to me).

They are very much like Oregon...they'll run a play every 10-15 seconds.

And..they normally run more.

But their OC is leaving for Tulsa and Art Brile's son is calling plays for the first time ever.

Bad lofted throw by petty. Should have been a pick

Sacked and turns around with pressure and delivers that long bomb on the money... Grit. Great poise. Very impressive day by Petty.

TD pass to the fat guy who changed his jersey!!!

Love it.

if you watch closely you'll notice Petty is a 1 read guy, he doesn't operate in a pocket (notice how he throws at the top of his dropback that's the hallmark of a read-option QB, there is no step up into the pocket going on), and if his 1st target isn't there he runs himself.

Many of his passes would have been intercepted at the NFL level

still he's having a fantastic day. its just his game doesn't translate into the NFL any better then RGIII's does.

that said, stick him on the bench a couple of years to learn how to read a defense, learn an nfl playbook, learn how to operate in the pocket and he might be an option 3 or 4 years down the road... sooner if he's a quick study.

it doesn't change the fact he doesn't read defenses, and doesn't know how to work out of a pocket.

it doesn't change the fact he doesn't read defenses, and doesn't know how to work out of a pocket.Saying he doesn't and saying he can't aren't the same. Again, I want a fast paced up tempo offense next year anyways and we have the weapons to keep it easy for him. At times he makes progressions and decisions and steps up and delivers the ball. But I agree that isn't their offense.

sidenote, the best looking qb i've seen the past two days has been that short kid from Boise St, Grant Hedrick

you want to take a flier on someone in the late rounds i'd take one on him, heck he'll probably be undrafted. still what i saw last night would make me bring him into camp.

Connor Cook with a dime throw and then quite possibly one of the dumbest decisions of the Bowl Season.

Just bad QB play in the 4th.

The one thing I've noticed is that Petty doesn't handle pressure well, and let me further quantify that. Petty can take in the face pressure and deliver the ball, but when he's forced to move off his spot, reset, and throw it has been plain ugly. For a guy with as much athleticism as he has that's a surprisingly lacking trait.

X-Era
01-01-2015, 02:40 PM

Footwork, shoulders, arm slot, and vision. It's all bad, granted small sample size.

Notice Petty now standing in the pocket taking the hits, rather than trying to evade them. He knows he can't make the throw he needs on the move.

Cook hits the quick slant to go ahead with less than :20 but it was a really poor drive from him.

Petty not wanting to move off his spot is part to blame for that 2nd sack. The first sack was just horrid OL play.

X-Era
01-01-2015, 02:59 PM
Botched fg, offensive face mask, and Baylor D lost this. Petty was really good. He has technical issues for sure. He won't cost more than a day two or even day three pick. If we can convince ourselves he can fix his issues and play in a pro offense I'd love to have him.

Cook looked like hell on the game-winning drive. 75% of his throws were just gawdawful. But, the three or four he did complete were nice, and all that matters when you put points on the board.
