    Reason to be optimistic about the Chiefs

    As our Chiefs open training camp today in River Falls, Wis., it feels like 1998 all over again.

    All that's missing is a foolish newspaper columnist and a Hall of Fame pass rusher running their mouths about a perfect 16-0 season and a city engulfed in Chiefs fever. All of the other ingredients are there.

    A busy off-season in the free-agent market improved the overall talent of Kansas City's defense. Carl Peterson, just like in Marty Schottenheimer's 10th and final season, has seemingly given Dick Vermeil, in his third and possibly last season, everything he wanted, including a signed-before-training-camp first-round pick. Kansas City's offense, like the 1998 defense, appears to be stocked and poised for a record-breaking season.
